Hello. If you are reading this, then I assume you have some interest in reading my Fanfic, "Transformers The Movie, What If Hot Rod had Not Gotten in the Way?" There are a few things you should know before you read it.
1. The character names, and other stuff of that nature are owned by Hasbro (as if I cared).
2. Any similarity to events or characters living or dead, fictional or real, is strictly coincidental. (If I get sued by any living robots I'm going to be a bit annoyed. :)
3. This story is based on the "What If..." Comic series by Marvel Comics. Uatu, the Watcher is owned by Marvel.
4. As you read, you might notice that there are two narrators. There is Uatu, who will appear to make comments to you alone occasionally, and then there is the generic "narrator" who tells the story. Might be a bit confusing.
5. I've never been known as a grammatical wizard, so I am sure there are some mistakes. So sue me.
6. I would appreciate any feedback on my story. Please send it to "OptimusPrime@MediaOne.net".
7. My story is organized in Chapters and in "books". All a book is, is a way of separating a group of related chapters.
8. I have borrowed some names and titles from other places. For Example, "Apocalypse Rising" is the title of a Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Episode, and "Decepticons Forever", is a line from Beast Wars. So, if you read a title, or a line, and say "I know I've heard that before", then you probably did.
9. If you found this on Alt.Toys.Transformers.Fanfic, or any other Newsgroup, and parts of it are missing, they are all available on my Web Site AWorldTransformed.com.
10. Enjoy!
"My name is Uatu. I am known by mortal men as the Watcher. For eons beyond calculation, I have lived on Earth's Moon, observing the course of your history. Sometimes, I look in on other dimensions, where your planet's history diverges from that which you know. Once again, we look in on a dimension where the Transformers crashed on Earth over four million years ago."
"We pick up our story two days after we last looked in on this universe. The Autobots and Skyquake's rogue Decepticons managed to escape from Megatron and his Decepticons. They retreated to a small out of the way island in the southern Pacific Ocean. It is here that they will plan their campaign to retake the planet."
The warm sun beat down, and Optimus Prime sat on the beach, looking out over the water. How calm it was, he thought. How peaceful. Truly paradise. Since they arrived on this island, this was the first time Optimus had a chance to look at how beautiful this place was. When they first arrived, several of them were suffering from the effects of the water. They were underwater for nearly twenty-four hours straight. It took almost a day for them to dry out enough to be properly repaired. Percepter and First Aid had been working non stop to repair everyone.
It was only three days until Megatron would address his troops. It was an opportunity that they could not afford to miss. Optimus was working on a plan, but for it to work, someone was going to have to go on a dangerous mission from which there would likely be no return. There was little chance of his plan succeeding if that mission was not accomplished. The fate of the planet Earth now rested in the decisions he was about to make. He knew it was time to tell the others of his plan. Five more minutes, he told himself. Five more minutes watching the gentle waves, and then it would be back to his duty. The more he thought of what was to come, the less peaceful everything seemed.
"A penny for your thoughts", said a voice from behind him. "Mind if I join you", asked the Thing.
"Not at all", said Optimus.
"Well, what's on your mind", asked the Thing.
Optimus did not respond.
"Worried about the Decepticons", asked the Thing.
"Yes", responded Optimus. It was only half true though. Only one Decepticon was on his mind, Megatron. The revelation of Megatron's origin, and his relationship to him was on his mind. Optimus knew he would have to face Megatron again, and he didn't know what would happen when he did. Megatron was still the greatest threat the universe had ever known, but now their was this added dimension. He was his brother, and although it shouldn't change anything, for Optimus Prime, it did. "The decisions I make in the next few days may very well mean the difference between saving the Earth, and letting Megatron take control of it forever."
"You remind me an awful lot of a friend of mine. Reed always thinks the fate of the world is on his shoulders, and no one else's. He never seems to learn that he has friends who are ready to help shoulder the burden", said the Thing. "From what I hear Optimus, there is not an Autobot on Earth or that planet of yours, Cybertron, who doesn't owe you his life a dozen time over. You have a lot of friends who are willing to help you. You aren't alone."
"I know that Thing, but there is a lot more going on here than you know. Everyone is missing some critical pieces of the puzzle", said Optimus somberly. Of course that was not entirely true. It still bothered him that no one knew who helped Soundwave create Megatron. If only he didn't know about Megatron's true origin, it would all be so much easier.
"Sounds like you're better off being the only one with all the facts", said the Thing.
"Not this time. It would be a lot easier if I didn't have all the facts. More so than you can possibly imagine", responded Optimus. Optimus stood up. "Come on, we had better all get together for a meeting. It's time to put our plan into effect."
"I didn't know we had a plan", said the Thing.
"We don't yet. I'm still working on it."
Spike sat in his quarters. He was constantly wondering if he had done the right thing, sending Daniel with Rodimus, and allowing him to have weapons. Daniel was growing up, but still, he couldn't shake the feeling that he should have said no anyway. Carly was going to be home soon, and he wasn't sure what he was going to tell her. Just then, the door opened, and in walked Carly.
"Hi, honey", said Spike as he got up and met her with a kiss. "How's your mother."
"How is she usually", said Carly.
"That good, huh", said Spike sarcastically.
"She did nothing but complain about her quarters the entire time. As if anyone had a lot of choice."
"Hopefully it won't be long now. I haven't heard from Rodimus since he left with the attack force."
"How's Daniel", asked Carly.
Spike had Carly sit down, and told her what had happened.
"You did what", she screamed when he told her about Daniel's weapon implants. "Spike, how could you let him."
"Carly, I didn't know what to do. He wasn't going to deal with anything sitting in his room alone, and he would hardly talk to either of us. I think maybe Rodimus can help him. He is his best friend."
"You don't get any argument from me on that Spike, but weapon implants? How is that supposed to help?"
"I think Daniel feels like he was hurt because he couldn't defend himself. I think Rodimus is hoping that the weapons will give him some confidence, even if he doesn't use them."
Carly sat motionless a moment, and then began to cry. Spike leaned over and put his arms around her.
"I know you're right Spike. Leaving him in his room was not going to help. I'm just scared something might happen to him."
"Rodimus will take good care of him, don't worry."
Spike really believed that Rodimus would take care of Daniel, but that didn't stop him from worrying too.
Megatron sat back in his command chair, reading construction reports on a data pad. After reading the first few lines, he hurled the pad at the wall, where it smashed to pieces, and crashed to the floor. The First Circle was on his mind, and there was nothing he could do about them yet.
Nightbird walked into the room.
"Nightbird, report", said Megatron.
"What, not even a hello", said Nightbird.
"I am in no mood for pleasantries", said Megatron.
"Well, I just wanted to see how you were. When you returned from South America, you seemed upset."
"I was upset, the Autobots eluded us", said Megatron.
"You might get your troops to believe that, but you aren't fooling me. Now out with it. What is going on here. I let it go the other day when Soundwave wanted to speak to you alone, but their is nothing you can't say in front of me. I am third in command of all of our forces", she said sternly. She walked over, and put a hand on his arm. "And don't forget, I love you."
Megatron knew she was right. He owed her answers. "Have you ever heard of the First Circle", asked Megatron.
She thought a moment. She had seen a mention of the First Circle in a Decepticon historical file, but all the information had been deleted, except for the name. "I have not", said Nightbird.
He told her of the First Circle, and how he came to exist, and of the mystery member who arranged for his creation. Most importantly he told her that they still existed.
"No wonder you have been upset. The First Circle could be a threat to us", said Nightbird.
"I am hoping that after my address of our forces, I will be able to crush any thoughts of an uprising from the First Circle. Once they know how tightly we hold this planet, I am sure they will renounce their former views."
Just then Soundwave walked into the room. "Megatron, I have information we must discuss", said Soundwave. "In private", he added shooting a look to Nightbird.
"No Soundwave. I have told Nightbird about the First Circle, you can speak in front of her", said Megatron.
"As you wish", said Soundwave hesitantly. He was not sure that it was a good idea to tell her, but it was out of his hands. "I found something in our main computer. It was a coded message about the First Circle."
"What did it say", asked Nightbird.
"I don't know. The words First Circle were easily deciphered, but the rest of the message incorporates the most complex coding I have ever seen. I have tried unsuccessfully to decode it."
"How long has it been there", asked Megatron.
"That's the really interesting part. It's time stamped to over a million years ago", said Soundwave.
"What use is it. It is probably nothing more than a recruitment notice, or perhaps some kind of communique. It can't be of any use to us."
"You are correct, but there is more", said Soundwave.
"What is it", asked Megatron.
"The file erases the access codes of whoever accesses the file. However, I was able to reconstruct an access log showing how many times it has been accessed and some partial access codes. If my calculations are correct, and I believe they are, thirty to forty percent of all Decepticons have accessed the file at one time or another. It has never been reported in all that time. The First Circle is much larger than we ever imagined."
"Thirty to forty percent of our forces are traitors", said Megatron.
"Not necessarily. Just because they read the message, and did not report it, does not mean they would betray you. It only means that on some level they are sympathetic to the First Circle's cause, but probably not enough to betray you outright", said Soundwave. "The First Circle is smart. Even those who are members, have spent millions of years fighting along side us. One thing is certain, there are traitors among us."
"What should we do", asked Nightbird.
Megatron sat speechless.
"Megatron, I think we should proceed as we had planned", said Soundwave.
"I agree", said Nightbird. As you said Megatron, when the First Circle members realize we have this planet, support will fall away from the First Circle."
"Very well", said Megatron. "Now leave me."
Soundwave and Nightbird left the room without another word.
Megatron sat in silence. For all these millions of years, he has been surrounded by traitors. It was unthinkable, but it was true nonetheless.
Back on Cybertron, Spike walked down a hallway toward the command center. The few Autobots who had stayed behind along with a handful of Earth Defense personnel were all that was needed to control Cybertron, everything was automated, but he felt he should go check on things anyway.
When Spike arrived in the command center, he expected to find nobody there, but Commander Smith was looking over the readouts.
"Hi John", said Spike.
"Hi Spike."
"Status report", said Spike.
"Nothing out of the ordinary. Spike, I don't know about you, but I've been talking with some of the boys from Earth Defense, and no one is very happy to be sitting around letting the Autobots rescue our planet. Don't get me wrong. They all support the Autobots, but they think they should be there too."
"I know what you mean. I've been fighting the Decepticons for a very long time. I would like to be there, but Rodimus put me in charge here, and I don't want to let him down."
Just then, the door opened, and in walked three men. Spike was surprised he had not heard from them sooner. He had hoped not to hear from them at all.
"Embassador Jenkins, Embassador Moroe, Embassador Suli, how may I help you", said Spike. They were the United Nations Earth Defense Committee.
"Mr. Witwicky, we are here to make an official request", said Embassador Jenkins. "The United Nations has voted to send the Earth Defense Force to Earth. Military personnel from every government in the world has joined the Earth Defense Force. We intend to retake our planet."
"Rodimus Prime's orders are for everyone to stay right here. Besides, you may have light weaponry, and space cruisers, but you don't have any heavy weapons. Without planes, tanks, and heavy weapons, you are know match for the Decepticons. You also don't know how to contact Rodimus Prime. If you go flying into the middle of things, you could worsen the situation."
"With all due respect Mr. Witwicky", said Embassador Moroe, "we aren't willing to sit around and do nothing. The Decepticons stole our planet, and we want to get it back."
"Spike, It's none of my business, and I hate to say it, but I agree with them. You can't expect us to sit around and wait", said Commander Smith.
"Mr. Witwicky, we will go without a means to contact Rodimus Prime if that is our only choice", said Embassador Suli.
Spike thought a moment. He didn't have a lot of choice. He couldn't let them go without being able to contact Rodimus, it could lead to a disaster. "I will not divulge the frequencies necessary to contact Rodimus, but I will go with you. You will give me command of the entire force."
"Unacceptable. Our forces need a military leader, and you aren't that", said Embassador Jenkins. "We all have great respect for you Mr. Witwicky, we know you have been fighting alongside the Autobots for a long time, but you do not have the military experience necessary to command a force of this size and importance."
Spike could see Commander Smith almost roll his eyes at that. Spike was never in the military, that was true, but he had seen more than his share of battles. "I will take the Earth Defense Forces to Rodimus Prime, and then he will take command."
"And what if we refuse", said Embassador Moroe.
"Then I will order all Cybertronian defenses online and disable any ship attempting to leave", said Spike. He hoped he had said it convincingly. He knew very well, he couldn't do that. He just hoped they wouldn't call his bluff.
"You wouldn't dare", said Embassador Suli.
"Try me", said Spike.
The three diplomats looked at each other for a moment.
"Very well, you leave us on choice", said Commander Jenkins.
"How soon will your forces be ready to leave", asked Spike.
"In two hours", said Embassador Suli.
The three of them left the room without another word.
"Don't you just love diplomats", said Spike to Commander Smith.
"Heavy on the dip", said Commander Smith. "Seriously Spike, are you sure about this."
"No, I'm not, but I'm going to do it anyway."
On the South Pacific island that was now their base of operations, the Autobots and Decepticons recovered from their watery escape.
In a small clearing in the jungle, just inland from the beach, Brawl, and Blitzwing were being repaired, while Octane, Skyquake, Frenzy, and Springer sat waiting for their turn.
"I wonder if this island has a name", said First Aid as he adjusted a circuit in Brawl's chest.
"It's not in my database", said Percepter as he closed the compartment on Blitzwing's back. "There you go, good as new."
"Thank you", said Blitzwing as he stood up. He headed off into the jungle.
"I wonder what's bothering him", said Octane as he waited for Percepter to start his repairs.
"Who cares", said Skyquake. "Hurry up and fix me."
"We'll get to you as soon as we can. Your injury is not that severe", said First Aid.
"Why don't you shut up Skyquake. You've been complaining about being repaired since we got to this island, and I'm tired of your voice", said Springer angrily.
"You dare to talk to me like that", said Skyquake, rising to his feet.
Springer stood up, toe to toe with Skyquake.
"What's going on here", asked Optimus Prime as he stepped into the clearing.
Skyquake backed down. "Nothing Optimus. Just a difference of opinion."
"Sorry Optimus, but I was really getting tired of his complaining", said Springer.
"Who wasn't", muttered Rumble.
Skyquake shot him an angry look, but Rumble didn't seem to care.
Optimus knew that nerves were on edge. Things weren't looking very good, and he could tell that Skyquake was not happy about the lack of respect his troops were showing him.
"Alert everyone, we will have a meeting, on the beach in thirty minutes", said Optimus. "Where's Blitzwing."
"He headed in that direction", said First Aid pointing into the jungle.
Optimus went looking for Blitzwing. He wanted to tell Blitzwing his plan before he told the others. Although he knew that Skyquake was not happy at being let out of the loop, he didn't want to tell him everything, not yet. He knew that if Skyquake knew about Megatron's origin, and his relationship to Optimus, he would surely play the other side of the coin, and use that information to take command of the Decepticon army from Megatron.
Optimus found Blitzwing sitting in a clearing, leaning against a tree.
"Blitzing, is something wrong", said Optimus as he walked into the clearing and sat down against another tree.
"Swindle could have got us all killed", said Blitzwing. "I blame myself, I should have seen it coming."
"You had no way of knowing Swindle would betray us", said Optimus.
"I know", said Blitzwing. "I've been waiting a very long time to stop Megatron. All those years of obeying his orders was not easy. Now, if we do not succeed, he may never be stopped. What we must do is too important to fail. Swindle must have contacted Megatron, and I missed it. We all missed it. He must have tampered with our holo-shield, and we missed that too."
"Well, the time is at hand to do something", said Optimus. "I have a plan."
"What do you plan", said Blitzwing.
"First, we are going to have to find a volunteer to get inside Decepticon HQ and get a message to Rodimus on Cybertron. He must lead an attack on this planet at just the right time, and in just the right place. He is to attack Australia. It is the least heavily defended area on the planet. Meanwhile, the rest of us will split into three teams. Team one will break into the Decepticons main satellite control center in Houston. They will have to bring down the Satellite defense network, allowing Rodimus Prime to lead an attack in. Once our attack force is in, we must bring the satellites back on line to prevent the Decepticons from escaping. Team two will be responsible for destroying the defense energy grid in Australia that powers the ground to air defenses there. Once the Autobot attack force lands, they will be able to finish it off. It's not as important as the Satellite center." Optimus paused.
"And what of team three", asked Blitzwing.
"Team three will be you, me, and some of the others. We must take over Megatron's address of his troops so you can announce to all First Circle members that the time for them to stand up for what they believe is at hand, and for them to lay down their weapons and surrender."
Blitzwing sat in silence for a moment. He had mixed feelings about the idea. "Is their no other way", asked Blitzwing.
"None that I can see. If we can cut the strength of the Decepticon army, we will be able to take back the planet. Their is only one problem I see. I'm sure their are some Decepticons who will try to pass themselves off as First Circle members. If the Autobots can't tell who is and isn't a member, they will have to take everyone prisoner, and sort it out later. That could seriously complicate things. We wish the First Circle to become allies. The First Circle members won't take kindly to being taken prisoner."
"Their is another way", said Blitzwing. "All members of the First Circle have an encoded identification number which allows our people to identify each other. You have only to scan them on the proper frequency to identify them. Unfortunately, any Decepticons will know he is being scanned. The test works, but not covertly."
"Can you give me the scanning specifications", asked Optimus.
"Certainly", said Blitzwing. "It has always been our most closely guarded secret. Only a handful of our members know how to scan for it."
"We had better go explain the plan to the others", said Optimus. "Their are a lot of preparations to make. This will be like a giant game of chess, and we have to have all of our pieces in place if we are to succeed. I just wish we had more pieces."
"We will have to make do with what we have", said Blitzwing. "I think we can be victorious."
"I hope so. Let's not divulge the First Circle's existence to them yet. I'm not sure Skyquake will go along with us if he knows that our plan will destroy the army he wants to control."
Blitzwing nodded. "You're right. We had better be very careful with him."
Blitzwing and Optimus got up and headed back toward the beach. Unbeknownst to them, someone had been listening to their conversation. Skyquake sat motionless. He didn't want to give himself away. If he helped carry out this plan, not only would Megatron loose the planet, but he would lose any chance of taking over the army himself and controlling Earth. He decided it was time to switch sides again. He stood up from his hiding place, but was knocked to the ground from behind.
Blitzwing stood over Skyquake. "Optimus, I told you I thought I heard something", called Blitzwing.
Optimus joined him. "Well Skyquake, how much did you hear", asked Optimus.
"Nothing, I heard nothing", said Skyquake.
Optimus could not believe he had been so careless. He should have been more careful while discussing his plan with Blitzwing. "Why is it I don't believe you", said Optimus. Optimus reached down and grabbed Skyquake, pulling him to his feet. "Now what did you hear", asked Optimus again.
Skyquake pushed Optimus away, "I heard enough", he said, and he began to transform.
Blitzwing pulled out his weapon and fired at Skyquake. Skyquake came crashing to the ground with energy leaking from his shoulder.
"Consider that payback. It took the repair drones a month to put me back together. I was so close to giving the First Circle a chance to change the ways of the Decepticons, and you had to screw it up."
"You are a traitor Blitzwing", said Skyquake.
"Perhaps, but I would gladly be a traitor fighting for a just cause than be loyal to a dying way of life", said Blitzwing.
Skyquake moved to get up, but Optimus grabbed him.
"Hold him down", said Optimus. Optimus opened a panel on Skyquake's chest.
"What are you doing", demanded Skyquake.
Optimus hit him square in the face, knocking him out cold. He started looking at Skyquake's circuitry.
"If you don't mind my asking", began Blitzwing, "what are you doing."
"I'm going to disconnect his audio circuits and motor functions. I don't want him telling anyone about our plan. I should have asked you before, are any of the Decepticons on this island members of the First Circle."
"Some of them, but not all. Some of them might react badly if they knew about the First Circle", said Blitzwing.
"Who do you trust most", asked Optimus.
"Astrotrain and Onslaught. They are both loyal to the First Circle, and know that I am it's leader. I think we can trust Rumble and Frenzy also."
"Very well. Who is not a member", asked Optimus.
"Ratbat, Buzzsaw, and Laserbeak", responded Blitzwing. "I'm not sure about Vortex, Blastoff, and Brawl.
"Help me carry Skyquake." Optimus knew how close they had come to disaster. If Skyquake were to tell Megatron about the plan, it would never succeed.
Ultra Magnus walked quickly down the hall of the ship. Kup and Arcee were right behind him. Alert sirens were going off, and flashing red lights could be seen every few feet on the walls.
"What did the readings indicate", asked Ultra Magnus.
"Some kind of energy discharge in Rodimus's quarters", said Kup.
"I called down, but he did not respond", said Arcee.
When they got to Rodimus's quarters, Ultra Magnus pressed the doorbell. There was no response.
"Computer, unlock door and open, authorization Magnus echo nine three", said Ultra Magnus.
A few seconds later, the door opened. The room was dark, and filled with smoke.
"Rodimus, are you in their", called Ultra Magnus.
"Come in", came Rodimus's voice.
The three walked into the smoke filled room. A moment later, the room's ventilation fan turned on, the smoke quickly disappeared, and the lights turned on. Rodimus Prime was sitting at his desk. The base of his computer monitor was sparking slightly, the rest of it was embedded in a blackened hole in the wall across the room.
Rodimus didn't say anything, he just sat there staring blankly at the charred wall.
Ultra Magnus looked at Kup and Arcee. "Why don't you two head back to the bridge. I think I can handle this".
Kup nodded, and he and Arcee left the room. As they walked down the hall they could hear Kup contact the bridge. "Cancel red alert, everything's under control...I hope."
Ultra Magnus looked at Rodimus. "Well, do you want me to guess, or would you like to tell me why you introduced the monitor to the wall.
"It needed a date", said Rodimus.
"Very funny. What's wrong Rodimus."
"I'm tired of waiting. I mean, what are we waiting for? For all we know, Optimus Prime and the others are dead. How long do we wait before we decide to attack head on, and hope we get lucky."
"Rodimus, we can't go rushing into this", said Ultra Magnus.
"Well at the rate we are going, we may as well go back to Cybertron and start looking for a new planet for the humans", said Rodimus. "I knew I wasn't cut out to be a leader."
"Don't talk like that. Optimus would not have left you in charge if he didn't think you could handle it. He has confidence in you. We all do."
"But I am the one who is ultimately responsible for what we do. If waiting is the wrong thing, then it's my fault. If not waiting is the wrong thing, then that's my responsibility too. Optimus may have confidence in me, but that doesn't mean much if I don't have confidence in myself."
"Rodimus, I know how you feel. Do you know how many times I have been on a mission and the mission commander was killed? More times than I can count, and most of the time, command fell to me. I'm not a leader, I'm a soldier. That's a fact, that is how I was designed. But when I had to, I led. I did what had to be done, no matter how difficult. You were meant to lead Rodimus. The Matrix chose you. It would not have chosen you if you couldn't do it. Maybe you need to go let off some steam. Maybe some target practice."
"No, not target practice. Daniel is probably there trying to sharpen his skills as a Deception killer, which my bright idea may has caused him to become. Just another in what I am sure will be a series of brilliant failures under my command."
"Rodimus, pull your head out of your tailpipe for a minute. You lack only confidence, and with time, you will gain that." Ultra Magnus paused. "You haven't been able to get anywhere with Daniel", said Ultra Magnus.
"No. He's hurting, but he's keeping it all in. I hate to see him like that, but he won't talk to me."
"I know Rodimus. Maybe Arcee could talk to him."
"It's worth a try", said Rodimus. Just then, Rodimus's communicator beeped.
"Bridge to Rodimus Prime. There is an incoming message for you on Spike's frequency. Should I patch it down to you", said Kup.
Rodimus and Ultra Magnus both looked at the burned hole in the wall.
"No, I'll come up their, Rodimus Prime out. I hope nothings wrong on Cybertron", said Rodimus. "I wasn't expecting to hear from Spike. I told him to contact me only in case of an emergency."
"Let's hope it's nothing serious", said Ultra Magnus as they left Rodimus's quarters.
The Autobots, Decepticons, and the Thing were all gathered on the beach, waiting for Optimus Prime and Blitzwing.
"Has anyone seen Skyquake", asked Springer.
"We have him", called Optimus as he and Blitzwing emerged from the jungle carrying Skyquake.
"What's going on", bellowed Brawl.
"Cool it Brawl", said Blitzwing. "Skyquake was going to betray us."
"But why", asked Vortex. "Betraying Megatron was his idea."
"Guess it shows some Decepticons just can't be trusted", said Springer.
"Unfortunately, I have to agree with you", said Astrotrain.
"So, Optimus, what's the plan", asked Skyfire.
"Before I go into the details of the plan, Blitzwing and I have decided that all aspects of this operation are on a need to know basis. For that reason, at this time, I must ask all of you to shut yourselves down, except for Ravage."
"Is that really necessary Optimus", asked Hot Spot.
"We believe it is. In the event that any of you are captured, we can't afford for Megatron to find out about our plan." Optimus could tell that none of them were very happy with the idea, but no one was really objecting.
"What about me", asked the Thing. "I don't exactly shut down like you guys do."
"I'm not worried about you Thing. As robots, Megatron could try to directly access our data banks, he couldn't do that to you."
One by one the Autobots and Deceptions shut down. Finally only Optimus Prime, Blitzwing, Ravage, and of course the Thing remained conscious. Blitzwing scanned everyone to be sure they were all dormant.
"It's all clear Optimus", said Blitzwing.
"Ravage, the success of our entire mission rests on you. If you fail, we can not succeed", said Optimus.
"What is my mission", asked Ravage.
"You must infiltrate Decepticon headquarters in Washington. It is one of only two places on the planet where messages can be sent through the protective shield. For reasons that I do not wish to make clear, we do not want you to try to infiltrate the satellite command center."
"I understand", said Ravage. "What is the message I am to send."
"You must send the message on this data chip to Rodimus Prime. It contains the frequency you must use to contact him, as well as a coded message. It's not that I don't trust you Ravage, but this message contains our entire plan, and if Megatron gets his hands on it, we're all dead." Optimus paused. "Ravage, I don't want to lie to you. I know you can get in undetected, but as soon as the message is transmitted, they'll know it. I don't think there will be any way for you to escape. The communications center is several stories underground. You must make sure that Megatron does not get that message."
"In other words, this is a suicide mission", said Ravage.
"I'm afraid so. I can't make you do this. I have had to send my troops on suicide missions before, and I have always asked for volunteers. If you don't want to do this, say so now, but if you don't, I don't think anyone else can pull it off."
"Blitzwing, do you think the plan will work", asked Ravage.
"I don't know. What I do know, is that it is the only chance we have."
"Very well. When do I leave", asked Ravage.
"Immediately. Blitzwing, wake Skyfire. Ravage, he'll fly you to Washington."
After waking Skyfire, he and Ravage took off for Washington. Optimus told Skyfire he would fill him in on what he needed to know when he returned.
"Shall I wake the others", said Blitzwing as they watched Skyfire rocket away.
"No. First we need to decide who will go on which mission. I've been thinking about it, and we might have a problem if we send any of the non First Circle members to the satellite station. That station must be held at all costs, and if any of the Decepticons decide to go against us when they hear about the First Circle, it could cause a problem", said Optimus.
"I agree. We should probably keep all those we are unsure of separated. If we send them on the Australian mission, and they bring down the Australian defense power grid, then it will be too late for any of them to change their minds", said Blitzwing.
"Then team three will be Brawl, Octane, Blastoff, Vortex, Ratbat, Buzzsaw, and Laserbeak", said Optimus.
"They should be able to destroy the energy grid. Today is Monday, and Megatron's address is scheduled for 2:00 P.M. Eastern Standard Time on Thursday", said Blitzwing.
"Then they should destroy the energy grid at precisely 2:03 Eastern Standard Time on Thursday. We will take over the address at exactly 2:02, just after Megatron starts boasting how great he is. Team three can plant energeon grenades, and detonate them remotely at the right time. Wake them up, and we will explain the plan."
Blitzwing woke the team of Decepticons who would be going on this mission, and they explained the plan to them.
"Blastoff, transport everyone to Australia, then you are in command. After you detonate the grenades, join the Autobot attack force. Rodimus Prime will already know you are with us", said Optimus.
The Decepticons took off for Australia. It would take them the next couple of days to plant the grenades.
"Optimus", began the Thing, "what if some of them change their minds before the address, and don't bring down the power grid."
"Then this is going to be a really short battle", said Optimus.
"Oh. I wish I hadn't asked", said the Thing.
"Blitzwing, wake the Protectobots, Percepter, Grimlock, and Hound", said Optimus.
Blitzwing woke them up.
"So, Optimus, what's our mission", asked Hound.
"Hound, you will command this mission. You must take control of the Decepticon's satellite control center in Houston, Texas."
"Sounds simple enough", said Blades.
"It isn't", said Optimus. "It is very well defended, and not only must you take over the installation, but you must hold it until backup arrives. As soon as possible, Rodimus Prime will send you reinforcements, but no matter how long it takes, you must hold out. If we do not control the satellites, we can't contain the Decepticons, and our forces will not be able to penetrate the shields. You must have control of the base by 2:05, and bring the shield down in only one area, the Australian zone. You will close the shield exactly fifteen minutes later, but by that time, the Decepticons will be there in force. "
"As the humans say, the defecation will really collide with the rotary oscillator", said Percepter.
"Huh", said Grimlock.
"I think he means the shit will hit the fan, and I think he's right", said Optimus. "The Decepticons will stop at nothing to take back that facility. That can't happen."
"Understood", said Hound. "How are we to get to Houston?"
"Defensor will fly you there. You should leave immediately", said Optimus.
"That's our cue guys", said Hotspot. "Protectobots, merge into Defensor."
The five Protectobots began to transform, and merged into the mighty robot Defensor. Defensor knelt down, and leaned down low. "Hop on everybody", he said.
Percepter, Grimlock and Hound climbed onto Defensor's shoulders, and he flew away.
"Wake everyone else", said Optimus.
Blitzwing woke the rest of the Autobots and Decepticons.
"Where did everyone else go", asked Springer?
"On their assigned missions", said Blitzwing.
"Alright everyone, it is time for total truth between us. We have a critical role to play. We must infiltrate Decepticons headquarters in Washington undetected. Just after Megatron begins his address, Frenzy, Rumble, and the Thing must gain control of the transmission room, and make sure that nothing interrupts the transmission. The rest of us must secure Megatron's command room, where he will give the address from. Most likely, we will find Megatron, Soundwave, and Nightbird there. It will be up to us to subdue them so that Blitzwing can give a little address of our own."
"And what is Blitzwing going to say? Is he going to appeal to their good nature to put down their weapons and surrender", said Springer sarcastically.
"No", said Blitzwing. "I intend to tell all members of the First Circle, that as their leader, I am asking them to put down their weapons and surrender."
Astrotrain, Onslaught, Frenzy, and Rumble stared at Blitzwing in amazement.
"How could you tell him", said Onslaught. "We have kept this secret for millions of years. What purpose does this serve?"
"I believe that the First Circle is at a critical juncture. If Megatron succeeds in controlling the Earth, I believe many members of the First Circle will begin to follow him, because he just might win with control of this planet. If Megatron succeeds, the First Circle will become irrelevant."
"But if we fail", began Astrotrain, "Megatron will certainly find out who we are, and destroy us all."
"That is a risk", began Blitzing, "but if we do fail, then I know that the Autobots will welcome our members into their ranks."
"Have I missed something", asked Springer.
"When you figure it out, would you mind explaining it to me", said the Thing.
Optimus Prime and Blitzwing explained the First Circle to them. They were surprised to say the least, but accepted it.
"When do we leave", asked Astrotrain.
"As soon as Skyfire gets back, we'll move out", said Optimus.
"How are we supposed to get in and take over without being detected", asked Onslaught?
"I have a plan for that too. We'll have to stop at the volcano base before we go to Washington. Skyfire should be back soon."
"What are we going to do with him", asked Springer pointing to Skyquake who lay motionless on the ground. You could see in his eyes, he had heard everything that was said, but was powerless to do anything.
"We'll take him with us, and leave him at the volcano base", said Optimus. "This is not going to be easy, but we can not fail, the fate of the Universe rests on what we do now. We must succeed, no matter the cost."
Optimus had gone over the plan a thousand times, and each time he saw something else that could go wrong, some other variable he could not control. But every time he came to the same conclusion. There was no other way. The fate of the planet Earth was resting on this.
In his command room, Megatron sat looking at status reports on the progress of the Earth Defenses. Things were proceeding according to plan. The satellite defense network would be ready on time, and the construction of his new base of operations, Ice Station Omega, built onto the base in Canada where he created the Xformers was nearly complete. It would be an impenetrable fortress, on an impenetrable planet. Truly, the place from which he could launch his conquest of Cybertron and the Universe. He looked forward to announcing his plans to his troops. He was sure that he could crush the First Circle by declaring victory over the Earth. Megatron heard the door chime.
"Come in", said Megatron.
Soundwave came in, followed by Nightbird.
"Megatron, I have some disturbing news", said Soundwave.
"Is this about the First Circle's message you found", asked Megatron?
"Yes. The access code fragments I recovered were not enough to identify those who have accessed the file. However, I was able to reconstruct the access code of the one who created the file", said Soundwave.
"Tell him who it is", said Nightbird.
"Yes Soundwave, tell me", said Megatron.
"I believe that he is the leader of the First Circle, and has been since before you were created. It must have been he who had you created Megatron.", said Soundwave.
"And who is it", demanded Megatron.
"Blitzwing", said Soundwave.
"So, he has been a traitor all these years. I would have given anything to kill him all those years ago. And now he is working with Optimus Prime", said Megatron. "Double security patrols. I do not want anything to interrupt my victory speech."
Not far from the White House, that was now the headquarters of the Decepticons, Ravage slipped slowly through some bushes, trying to remain concealed. It was getting late in the day, and it would be dark soon. He intended to slip onto the grounds in the dark, and climb to the roof. He thought that was the safest way in.
Once it was dark, he made his way to the fence surrounding the White House. He easily jumped it, and stayed covered behind a row of bushes. Slowly, Ravage made his way across the lawn to the side of the building. He climbed the building slowly, careful not to make any sound. When he reached the roof, he found only two guards, and both of them were off in one corner talking to each other. Ravage quietly slipped across the roof to the doorway leading to a stairwell.
Once inside he began to scan for cameras, and was careful to avoid them. This was almost too easy he thought. If he was lucky, he could probably slip out the same way. Ravage ducked behind a door as two Decepticons walked by. It was Runabout and Runamuck, Ravage could hear them talking.
"I hear that Megatron has big plans for that little runt who killed Storm", said Runamuck.
"Yep, I think he is going to execute him during his speech", said Runabout.
"I hope he tortures him first", said Runamuck.
"It wouldn't be any fun if he didn't", said Runabout.
They both began to laugh.
It had to be Bumblebee, thought Ravage. It couldn't be anyone else. Ravage's first instinct was to go look for Bumblebee, but he knew if he did that, he might not get the message sent in time. Ravage continued to the communications room once Runamuck and Runabout were gone. There was only one Decepticon on duty. It was Dead End. Ravage slowly entered the room. Dead End had his back to him. Ravage crept up close behind him. He tapped him on the shoulder, and as he spun around he dragged his claw over Dead End's neck, slashing it open. Dead End fell to the floor, energeon leaking from his neck. He was convulsing for a moment, then he stopped. Ravage went right to work. He set the controls for the proper frequency that Optimus had specified, and sent the message. It took only a moment to hear alarms sounding all over the base. The status said the message had been sent. Ravage erased the information from the computer, and the datachip. Ravage backed up to the door and fired a missile at the communications unit, blowing it to pieces.
"Now that's what I call erased", said Ravage to himself. He left the room, but he could hear the guards coming. Ravage opened a ventilation panel and got inside, pulling the panel shut behind him. He headed down the narrow shaft, taking every opportunity to go up. For a moment, Ravage thought he might escape, but then he remembered Bumblebee. He couldn't leave without trying to rescue him.
Rodimus walked down the corridor of the ship towards the shuttle bay, where Spike's shuttle was docking. He understood why Spike did what he did, but he wasn't sure what to do with the human forces. They were armed, but only lightly, they were no match for the Decepticons.
When he arrived, the shuttle was already docked, and Spike was emerging from it.
"Hello Spike", said Rodimus.
"Hello Rodimus. I'm sorry about this, but they did not leave me a lot of choice", said Spike.
"I know. I can't say I blame them, but I'm not sure what to do with them now. We still have no plan to try and retake the planet", said Rodimus.
"Still no message from Optimus", asked Spike?
"Not yet. I'm getting worried", said Rodimus.
"Speaking of worried, how's Daniel.
"Spike, I don't know what to do. I really screwed up. I can't get through to him, and I talked you into letting him become a walking arsenal."
"He's not a little kid anymore Rodimus. We had no right to stand in the way of what he wanted. We can only try and talk him out of what he wants to do", said Spike. "Where is he."
"I haven't told him you are here. I sent Arcee to talk to him. I'm hoping she can do better than I have." Rodimus didn't want to talk about Daniel anymore right now, so he changed the subject. "I'll need to be briefed on exactly what the human force is comprised of."
"Not much I'm afraid", said Spike. We have troops with minimal hand weapons, and pilots with no planes. If we can get a hold of some of the major Earth Defense Installations, and the Decepticons have not destroyed the equipment, they may be helpful, but as it is, I'm afraid they can't do much."
Spike and Rodimus headed for the bridge. The target range was on the way, and they were going to stop by on the way to the bridge and see Daniel. When they got to the range, they could hear Arcee and Daniel inside.
"Come on Daniel, why won't you talk to me", said Arcee.
"Rodimus sent you, didn't he", said Daniel angrily.
"Daniel, he's worried about you", said Arcee, "we all are. I know how much you must be hurting."
"You can't know. I really get tired of everyone saying that they know how I feel. You don't know. No one does", said Daniel. He fired at some targets, completely destroying them.
"Then tell me", said Arcee. "I can't help you if you won't talk to me."
"Arcee, what do you want me to say? Megatron came blasting into the control room, where my Mom, Dad, and I were. He just started shooting at everything. I saw the wall explode, and come down on my Dad. I tried to go help him, but before I could, I was hit myself. I don't remember anything after that. I woke up in the hospital. What good am I to anyone Arcee. I couldn't help Dad. I couldn't even help myself."
Daniel fell to his knees, and began to cry. Rodimus looked down at Spike.
"He thinks he let me down", said Spike to Rodimus. Spike entered the target range. "Daniel", said Spike as he reached his son's side, kneeling down beside him. He put his arms around him.
"Dad, I'm sorry."
"You don't have anything to be sorry about son."
Arcee headed for the door, and met Rodimus in the hall.
"Thanks Arcee. I'm glad you were able to discover exactly what was wrong", said Rodimus. "He thought he let his father down."
"You don't need to thank me Rodimus. Daniel is my friend too. I'm just glad I could help. I think it just took a woman's touch", said Arcee, and she headed down the hall.
Rodimus closed the door to the target range so Spike and Daniel could be alone. Perhaps Ultra Magnus was right, and he did just need a little confidence. At least things appeared to be working out for Spike and Daniel.
Skyfire rocketed through the air towards the Autobots Volcano base. He was flying low to stay below radar, and was staying in canyons and valleys as much as he could.
Optimus Prime leaned back against the side of the cargo hold. It was fortunate that the Decepticons had not destroyed or utilized the base. Megatron had probably figured that it was booby trapped. If that was the case, he had figured correctly.
"We'll be landing at the Volcano in one minute", said Skyfire.
"Blitzing, you come with me", said Optimus. "The rest of you, stay here. I want to be on our way to Washington in just a few minutes."
Blitzwing and Optimus grabbed Skyquake and carried him into the base.
Once inside the base, Optimus and Blitzwing put Skyquake in a cell, and energized the bars.
"Stripes are definitely your color Skyquake", said Optimus.
"Yes", said Blitzwing, "I could get used to seeing him in there."
Skyquake tried to move, and to talk, but he could not. He would have revenge on them for this, he vowed to himself.
Blitzwing and Optimus walked towards Percepter's lab.
"So, Optimus, what is your plan", said Blitzwing.
"Some years ago, Percepter had a machine that could make anything larger or smaller. We used it against Megatron when he found the heart of Cybertron. I had Percepter adapt it to a small device that could be worn by an individual. It will allow us to become small enough to get into the White House undetected. By the time we return to our normal size, Megatron won't know what hit him. We will also need something to incapacitate Megatron with. Percepter developed a device that can temporarily block motor control, but it must be placed on the neck. He called it a paralyzer. Not very effective in a battle, but for this, with the element of surprise on our side, it might work."
"An excellent plan", Optimus.
Optimus hoped Blitzwing was right.
Unbeknownst to them, in his cell, Skyquake managed to reroute power to his auto repair system, which slowly began to re- activate him.
Rodimus raced towards the bridge. A message from Optimus Prime was just what he had been waiting for.
Rodimus entered the bridge. The view screen was blank.
"What happened", said Rodimus.
"We thought it was a live transmission when I called you", said Ultra Magnus, "but it was a recording sent only once, we were lucky to receive it at all."
"Play it back", said Rodimus.
The screen flickered to life showing Optimus Prime.
"This message must get to Rodimus Prime, and is for him and Ultra Magnus only." The message paused, waiting for Rodimus to enter his security code.
"Clear the Bridge", said Rodimus. Everyone but Ultra Magnus left the bridge. Rodimus sat down in the command chair and entered his access code. The message continued.
"Rodimus, we have a plan to take back Earth. At exactly 2:05 Eastern Standard time on Thursday, you must lead our forces in an attack on the Australian continent. We will bring down the defense shield in that area only at exactly 2:05 for fifteen minutes. You should not encounter any strong ground to air resistance. The Australian defense power grid will be brought down just before the shield. Once you land, you have three priorities. First and foremost, you must dispatch a strike force to Houston Texas. We will have taken over the Decepticons satellite control facility there. It must be held at all costs. Second, I will need reinforcements in Washington, at the White House, I want you to lead that force. Ultra Magnus will be in charge of securing the Australian continent as a base of operations. Once Australia, Washington, and the satellite facility in Houston are secure, we will formulate a plan to take back the rest of the planet. There is an additional complication. We have allied ourselves with a group of Decepticons. Some of the Decepticons are members of a secret organization called the First Circle. Ask Kup about it. I am sure he will remember hearing about them. The members of the First Circle are not to be attacked. Coded in this message is a scanning frequency. Scan all Decepticons before they are attacked, and any with the correct signature are not to be harmed. They will either join you against the other Decepticons or lay down their weapons. They are not to be taken prisoner. We have a tremendous opportunity here. We don't want any misunderstandings. Rodimus, I do not know exactly what your situation is, and I have no way of knowing if you will get this message or not. If you do not get this message in time to lead the attack, then our mission will not have succeeded. In that event, as my successor as Leader of the Autobots, you must prepare Cybertron. It will be only a matter of time before Megatron tries to take Cybertron, and with the resources of the Earth at his command, he will have an incredible advantage. In any event Rodimus, good luck. Till all are one."
The screen went dark. Neither Ultra Magnus or Rodimus spoke for several minutes, then Rodimus broke the silence.
"Ultra Magnus, get Arcee, Blurr, Blaster, Kup, and Spike, together for a meeting in one hour."
"Understood", said Ultra Magnus.
On the continent of Australia, the Decepticon team had set up a base of operations in a cave not far from the main power station. They had already managed to place most of the explosive charges. Blastoff, Brawl, and Octane were busy assembling a satellite connection so they could see Megatron's address.
"Finally, it's all finished", said Octane.
"Now we will be able to see Megatron's face when Optimus and Blitzwing take over the broadcast", said Brawl.
Blastoff leaned back against the side of the cave.
"Something wrong Blastoff", asked Octane.
"I don't like this", said Blastoff. "I was willing to betray Megatron. I don't think he should be our leader after all that happened, but to attack our comrades, especially with a sneak attack like this...I don't know, it just doesn't seem right to me. It didn't help any when Skyquake was going to betray us. He had to have a reason."
"So what are you going to do Blastoff", asked Brawl. "Are you going to detonate the charges on time?"
"Yes, I will. At this point, Megatron will never let us rejoin the Decepticons, so I guess we have nothing to loose."
Meanwhile, in Houston, the Autobots were preparing a strategy for getting into the satellite control center and taking it over. They were gathered just outside of Houston in an abandoned warehouse.
"I think I have a plan", said Hound.
"Good, we going to smash our way in", said Grimlock.
"Thanks for the suggestion Grimlock, but I think something a little less direct is in order", said Hound. Protectobots, as Defensor, you will fly us to the control center." Hound produced a large hologram of the control center. "We don't need to take over the entire installation, we only need the satellite control room, and the communications array. They are located on the east end of the complex. I will use my holographic generator to make us look like a cloud. By the time they realize what's going on, we will already be in position. Protectobots, you must put up a force field over the array and control room."
"We won't be able to hold it long once the Decepticons start their attack", said Blades.
"I have that taken care of", said Hound. Percepter, you will stay with Defensor. A main energy conduit flows right by the array. You can connect Defensor into it, and use it to boost the shield. Considering the amount of power there, the shield should hold for at least an hour. Hopefully reinforcements will show up before that."
"What if they shut off the power", asked Percepter?
"That's a good question", said Hound.
"They won't", said Streetwise. "If they shut that down, then they loose all of the base's defenses. They won't know that there are only eight of us, so they won't risk opening themselves up to further attacks."
"Alright then, Grimlock and I will deal with any resistance from the command room, and take control of the satellites", said Hound.
On the Autobots Command ship, Rodimus Prime headed towards the conference room where he would show the others the message from Optimus Prime. He was not sure he should play the end of the message where Optimus mentioned that he would succeed him as leader of the Autobots. It was assumed that he would one day take over for Optimus, since that seemed to be what the Matrix wanted, but he didn't think he was ready for it. Rodimus had no confidence in himself. If he could not see himself as a leader, how could anyone else see him as a leader?
When he arrived at the conference room, everyone was there as requested. Daniel was there also.
"Alright everyone, I'm going to cut to the chase. Ultra Magnus, play Optimus's message", said Rodimus.
The screen came on, and the message played.
"Now, let's all be clear on this. At exactly 2:05, I will lead all Autobot forces through the shield. Ultra Magnus, you will take our main force and secure the Australian continent. Kup, Blurr, you will take a force to Houston to secure the satellite control center. Take Omega Supreme, and the Dinobots. Blaster, Arcee, you will come with me. We'll take the Aerialbots and Sky Lynx. Spike, you will remain here with the Earth Defense Forces. I will signal you to land when we have control of Australia and the Satellite Control Center in Houston."
"They aren't going to like that", said Spike.
"Well, they'll get over it", said Rodimus.
"Alright everyone, let's get ready." Everyone left the room, except Spike and Daniel.
Rodimus sat down at the conference table.
"So how are you two doing", asked Rodimus.
Daniel looked up at Rodimus. "I'm sorry Rodimus, I've been such a pain", said Daniel. "I didn't mean to take it out on you.
"Daniel, you don't have to be sorry. What are best friends for", said Rodimus with a smile.
Megatron walked towards his command room. His inspection tour of the Washington area was over, and it was almost time for him to address his troops. Victory would finally be his.
Unknown to Megatron as he walked, he was passed by a miniature white and red jet, carrying the only threat to his potential victory.
"That was close", said Skyfire.
"I thought for sure he would detect us", said Astrotrain.
The Autobots and Decepticons were all gathered in Skyfire's cargo bay. They had been over the plan a dozen times. The Thing, Frenzy and Rumble would secure the broadcast transmitter and camera room, and make sure the cameras kept rolling. Astrotrain and Springer would take care of Soundwave and Nightbird, the only ones who would likely be with Megatron during his speech. They would have only one chance to put the paralyzer devices on them. They only had three of the devices. Onslaught would secure the doors. Optimus would put the last paralyzer on Megatron, and Blitzwing would give the most important speech the galaxy had ever known. If everything went correctly, the shield would be down, and the Autobot invasion force on the ground in Australia before mid-afternoon. They had one piece of business to attend to first.
Skyfire flew through the corridors until he found what they needed.
"There it is", said Blitzwing, pointing to the view screen.
"That is a main computer access panel", said Frenzy.
"Can you get through it without causing an alarm to sound", asked Blitzwing.
"I think so", said Skyfire. Skyfire flew up to the panel. It was only a foot tall, but at their present size, it was enormous.
Skyfire fired a missile at the corner of the panel, opening a hole just large enough for him to fly through. Once inside, he landed,
"This won't take long", said Rumble.
Rumble and Frenzy went outside, and started their work.
Inside Skyfire, Optimus Prime was still contemplating their plan.
"Blitzwing", began Optimus, "Have you decided what you are going to say."
"No, I have not. If I think about it too much, it will not sound sincere. Even the First Circle members will not blindly betray their comrades. I'll have to be very convincing. I think I can best do that on the spot, without rehearsal."
"I will leave that up to you, my friend. You know the stakes, and I trust your judgement", said Optimus.
"That means a lot Optimus", said Blitzwing.
Just then, Frenzy and Rumble returned.
"Well, did you do it", asked Springer.
"Yes", said Frenzy. Rumble handed a data pad to Optimus.
"This has the readout for both the satellite shield, and the Australian power grid. It will alert you when there is a change in the status of either of them."
"Alright, then I guess it's time to take our places", said Optimus. Drop Frenzy, Rumble, and The Thing off at the broadcast room, and then we better get to Megatron's chamber. The address begins in twenty minutes."
Soundwave walked towards Megatron's command room, the two prisoners floating behind him in antigrav cages.
"So Soundwave, is this how you treat your creations", said Ravage, fighting the pain of the energeon drain from the cage.
"You betrayed the Decepticon cause Ravage, now you will pay for it with your life, as will your friend. I would never have believed you would risk your life for an Autobot."
"There was a time Soundwave when I would not have risked my life for a friend, but I've changed."
"A friend", began Soundwave, "This Autobot would blast you right now if he had the chance."
Once that might have been true, but Ravage new better. When he found Bumblebee, he was unconscious. Before Ravage could figure a way to get Bumblebee out of the base, he was captured. Ravage wished he knew what Optimus's plan was. He was sure there would be an opportunity for escape, but he didn't know when it might come. He couldn't do anything but wait.
Megatron sat in his command chair, waiting for Soundwave to arrive. Nightbird was already busy preparing the energeon chains on the walls for the prisoners. She wanted to make sure they would live through the speech so she decreased the energeon absorption rate. They would die a slow and painful death.
"Are you finished, Nightbird", asked Megatron.
"Almost", she said. "There, all done."
Soundwave walked through the door, with the prisoners in tow.
"Excellent Soundwave, chain them up", said Megatron
Soundwave and Nightbird chained Ravage and Bumblebee up against the wall.
Bumblebee regained consciousness as the chains started to draw the energeon from him.
"What, where am I", said Bumblebee weakly?
"Don't try to move", whispered Ravage.
"Ravage, what are you doing here."
"Let's just say, I was in the neighborhood."
"You didn't have to come after me Ravage. If that grenade wasn't defective, you wouldn't be here now", said Bumblebee.
"And you would be dead", said Ravage. "I prefer the current situation."
"Good point, I like the way you think", said Bumblebee.
"Silence", ordered Megatron. "I will not have you disrupting my speech."
Bumblebee looked at Ravage. "Does Optimus have a plan", he asked.
"I hope so", said Ravage.
"Megatron, it is time", said Soundwave.
"Excellent", said Megatron. He was so looking forward to this. He had shined himself up. His green armor plaiting and the cannon on his shoulder almost sparkled.
"Now begin", said Nightbird.
"My fellow Decepticons, it is a glorious day. The Earth is ours. We now have it's limitless energy resources to fuel our conquest of the galaxy. But there are many obstacles to overcome. The Autobots continue to elude us. There may be traitors in our midst. See now what happens to Autobots, and those who betray us." Megatron motioned to his right where Bumblebee and Ravage were strung up on the wall. This is the price of being our enemy, the price of betrayal, and now they shall pay the ultimate price. Megatron stood up from his chair, and turned towards them. He started to charge cannon, but at that moment, the doors burst open, and in came Skyquake.
"What are you doing here", demanded Soundwave.
"Megatron, it's a trap", said Skyquake.
"What...", began Megatron, but he got no further, Onslaught, Astrotrain, Springer, Optimus Prime, and Blitzwing suddenly appeared as if out of nothing. Onslaught knocked Skyquake to the ground as he ran for the control panel to lock the doors, Astrotrain tackled Soundwave, getting the paralyzer on him in one try. Springer ran toward Nightbird, but she leapt over him, and landed a foot to his back, sending his sprawling. Optimus jumped on Megatron from behind, easily placing the device on him. Blitzwing fired a shot at Nightbird, she fell to the ground, and Springer placed the device on her. By now, it was 2:03. Optimus checked the data pad, and it read that the Australian power grid was completely deactivated. Optimus went over to where Skyquake was practically cowering on the floor.
"You should have stayed where you were Skyquake", said Optimus. He pulled him to his feet, and went over to where Astrotrain and Springer were freeing Bumblebee and Ravage from the energeon chains. Optimus chained Skyquake up, and turned down the power on the chains so it would only restrain him.
"Well done, everyone", said Optimus. He spoke into his communicator, "Optimus to Frenzy, how are things on your end."
"All clear here Optimus. We're rolling", said Frenzy.
"You're on Blitzwing", said Optimus. Optimus stepped away from where Blitzwing stood in front of Megatron's command chair.
"All Decepticons, listen well to what I have to say. For millions of years, I have been the leader of the First Circle. Members of the First Circle, today we have an incredible opportunity. Today, we can put our lives of conquest and senseless violence aside. We can denounce our former ways, and follow the path of peace. In moments, the Autobot invasion force will begin a campaign to retake the planet Earth. I urge all members of the First Circle to aid them in this effort, or lay down your weapons. The Autobots will be able to identify you, and you will not be harmed. To all the Decepticons who are not members of the First Circle, I urge you to lay down your weapons."
Optimus checked the data pad. It was 2:05, and the shield was down over Australia. Everything was going according to plan. Optimus was listening so intently to Blitzwing's speech that he did not notice the paralyzer beginning to wear off of Megatron.
"For the glory of the First Circle", said Blitzwing, "for the glory that is peace."
"Traitor", bellowed Megatron, as he rolled over and fired his shoulder cannon at Blitzwing hitting him square in the chest, and sending him crashing into the wall. Soundwave caught Springer off guard sending him sprawling to the floor with a fist in the face. Nightbird produced an energy sword, and sliced off Astrotrain's arm. Bumblebee and Ravage were too weak to do anything. Onslaught and Optimus Prime rushed to Blitzwing's side. Soundwave grabbed Skyquake, and followed Megatron and Nightbird out of the room.
"Onslaught, lock that door", said Optimus. As Onslaught went to lock the door, Optimus pulled Blitzwing up, "How bad is it Blitzwing."
"Primary circuits failing. Loosing power. Auxiliary circuits fused. Laser core destabilizing. Deactivation imminent", said Blitzwing weakly.
"Blitzwing, I'm so sorry", said Optimus.
"Sorry for what", said Blitzwing. "I'm not going to make it, but the First Circle will live on. Millions of years of waiting have finally paid off. Peace may be at hand." Blitzwing smiled weakly. "Optimus, promise me something."
"Anything Blitzwing", said Optimus.
"Don't let Megatron win. No matter what occurs, he can not destroy what we have begun here today. Peace in the galaxy depends on it. The future of the entire Universe is at stake. Megatron must not win."
"I won't let him", said Optimus. "I promise."
"Then it was all worth it", said Blitzwing. "Goodbye Optimus Prime. Till all are one."
A moment later, his eyes dimmed, he was gone. "Till all are one Blitzwing. Till all are one my friend."
Onslaught put a hand on Optimus's shoulder. "We have to leave him Optimus. There is still much to do. We need to find a defendable position until reinforcements arrive, and Astrotrain, Bumblebee and Ravage require repairs.
Optimus nodded, and gently laid the body of Blitzwing down on the ground.
In the broadcast room, Frenzy, Rumble, and The Thing barely had time to notice what had happened, they had problems of their own.
"That door isn't going to hold much longer", said Frenzy.
"Tell us something we don't know", said Thing.
They could feel the vibration of laser blast after laser blast on the door, then all at once, it stopped.
"I don't like the sound of this", said Rumble.
"We gotta get outta here", said Thing. "What's on the other side if this wall?"
"Outside", said Frenzy.
"Both of you follow me", said The Thing.
All of a sudden, a huge orange metallic fist came through the door.
"I was afraid of that, looks like my evil twin", said Thing. The Thing ran at the wall, and crashed through it, Frenzy and Rumble were right behind him. The door behind them gave way, and the Xformer known as Thing came through it, and continued right out after them.
On the White House lawn, the Thing turned, and faced the Xformer created in his own image.
"And I thought I was ugly", said the Thing.
"Your insults mean nothing to me", said the Xformer Thing.
The Xformer Thing was fully twice his height, but Thing had taken on bigger opponents before.
The orange robot ran at the Thing. The Thing wound up a mighty right hand, and connected with his alter self. It barely staggered the Xformer, but it sent Thing flying.
"That shot would've leveled an aircraft carrier", said The Thing.
"Too bad you aren't fighting an aircraft carrier", said the Xformer Thing. He grabbed Thing, and began to spin him around, letting him go flying into the Lincoln Memorial. The structure came down on top of him. "He's not getting up from that", said the Xformer Thing. The Xformer Thing went to the Lincoln Memorial to make sure he was finished off.
"Come on Thing, don't you want to come out and play", he said, standing over the pile of rubble that was the Lincoln Memorial.
"Yeah I think I will", came the Thing's voice from under the rubble. It exploded, knocking the Xformer Thing onto his back.
The Thing ran up to him, and hoisted him up over his head. "Let's see how much you like to fly", said the Thing. He hurled his robotic counterpart up into the air, and he landed on top of the Washington Monument chest first. The monument dug deep into his chest before it collapsed beneath him.
The Thing came up to where the hulking orange mass of metal lay on the ground leaking energeon. from the gaping wound. A moment later he stopped moving. "I guess he got the point", said the Thing, and he headed back towards the White House.
Down in Houston, the Autobots at the Satellite control center were not faring well.
"How much longer can you hold it Defensor?", asked Percepter.
"Two minutes, maybe three at the most, then I won't even be able to hold together."
"Help should be here any minute", said Hound over the radio. They shut down the shield ten minutes ago. If the Autobots didn't make it in, holding this installation would be the least of their problems. "Grimlock, when Defensor's shields fail, we need to get out there and defend the Protectobots as best we can. They won't be in any condition to fight", said Hound.
"What about control room", said Hound.
"If that shield goes down, we won't be able to hold it."
"That sound not good", said Grimlock.
"No Grimlock, it isn't good", said Hound. Then Hound's communicator sounded.
"Kup calling Hound, are you there."
"You bet we are, but not for long, what's your ETA", asked Hound.
"Now", said Kup.
Hound looked out the window and saw the Dinobots, Kup and Blurr jumping from Omega Supreme, just outside the complex.
In Washington, Optimus, Springer, and Onslaught met up with Frenzy, Rumble, and Thing, and managed to get their wounded comrades to the basement of the White House. They were trapped, but if they could hold out until help arrived, they would be alright. Several times, the Decepticons tried to rush them, but each time they fought them back. They were running low on energy, and things didn't look good.
"One more time Optimus, and I think they'll get through", said Onslaught. "I only have two or three more shots left in my gun."
"That goes for me too", said Springer. "Astrotrain already gave his extra power to try and help Bumblebee and Ravage."
"How useless am I", said the Thing. "I don't have a weapon."
"If they get through that door, you will be plenty useful Thing", said Optimus.
"Optimus", said Ravage. "There, that wall is new." He pointed to a wall at the far end of the room. "That used to be the tunnel entrance."
"It's worth a shot", said Optimus. Optimus pointed his weapon at the wall.
"Hold on Optimus, allow me", said the Thing. Thing ran toward the wall, and crashed right through it.
"Let's get out of here", said Optimus. Optimus, picked up Bumblebee and Onslaught picked up Ravage. Thing, Astrotrain, and Springer followed them down the tunnel.
"I think I'll take care of any attempt to follow us", said Springer. He shot at the top of the tunnel behind him, collapsing it.
They made their way through the tunnels, and finally they emerged into the daylight. High above, they were spotted by Thrust and Dirge. The Decepticons jets swung around and flew in low to attack.
"Scatter", yelled Optimus, but the jets were hit suddenly, and broke off their attack.
"It's the Aerialbots", said Springer.
"Silverbolt calling Rodimus, Silverbolt calling Rodimus, I've found them."
Ten minutes later, Sky Lynx landed and picked them up.
"Optimus, am I glad to see you", said Rodimus.
"The feeling is mutual. Sky Lynx, get us to Australia. We can't give the Decepticons time to regroup. We've got to keep the pressure on", said Optimus.
Optimus could hardly believe they had succeeded with a plan where so much had gone wrong. But something had gone wrong. Blitzwing had paid for their success with his life.
"Well, we have witnessed some incredible events, and there is hope for the planet Earth", said Uatu. "Over the next three weeks, the battle raged all over the Earth. There were casualties on both sides, but each and every battle was a win for the Autobots and the First Circle."
Optimus Prime walked slowly down the corridor of the Australian Defense installation that was their base of operations. In the past three weeks, the Autobots and the First Circle had beaten the Decepticons at every turn. One week ago, Optimus had allowed the Earth Defense Forces to land, and they had joined in the battle against the Decepticons.
Somehow, none of the good news could change what was bothering Optimus. He had himself lead many battles in this offensive, but he was always distracted. The truth of his and Megatron's creation was always on his mind. If he had killed Megatron during the Battle of Autobot City, without hesitation, how many lives would he have saved? He knew that torturing himself would never bring any of them back. It would never let any of them live again. It would never bring back Elita One. He had come to terms with Elita's death, but it did not make it easy to know he could have prevented it. Even worse was knowing why he didn't prevent it.
Optimus knew he would face Megatron again, and when he did, he would make sure that Megatron knew the truth of their origins. He didn't know why that was so important to him, but he promised himself he would tell him.
Optimus arrived at the command center, and found Ultra Magnus and Rodimus going over some plans. They looked a little beat up. "What happened to you two?"
"We just got back from Asia", said Ultra Magnus. "We won, but we got a little singed."
"It was a bit close for my tastes", said Rodimus.
Optimus chuckled. "You are in one pieces, and that's what counts."
"I guess you're right", said Rodimus. "But I will need a new paint job."
"Status report", said Optimus.
"Optimus, things are looking good", said Ultra Magnus.
"We have control of Australia, Japan, Asia, Africa, South America, and parts of Europe and North America. We estimate that we now have taken twenty-five percent of the Decepticon army prisoner. We estimate another twenty percent have fallen in battle since our offensive began. Add to that the thirty-five percent who were members of the First Circle, and they have only twenty percent of their army remaining", said Rodimus. "They can't beat us at 20% strength. The First Circle alone has them outnumbered almost two to one. Add our own forces, and the Earth Defense Force, and they are severely outnumbered. Not even Megatron can pull this one out."
"But we still can't find Megatron, can we", asked Optimus, already knowing the answer.
"No Optimus, I'm afraid not", said Ultra Magnus. He and Rodimus could both see that something was bothering Optimus.
"Optimus, what's wrong", asked Rodimus. "Ever since we picked you up in Washington, it seems like something else is on your mind. We are on our way to taking back the Earth. What is bothering you."
Optimus knew he couldn't hide it from them. "There is something you don't know about Megatron. He may not even know it about himself." Optimus paused. It was hard to even say the words. "Megatron was created by the First Circle. He was their attempt to create a peaceful leader for the Decepticons."
"I think they missed the goal", said Rodimus.
"They were betrayed. Soundwave, with the help of another, corrupted the life force that they used. Megatron was the result."
"Optimus, why is that bothering you so much? I could understand how the First Circle must have felt, creating their own worst enemy, but it's ancient history. You weren't even created when it happened", said Ultra Magnus.
"There is something you aren't telling us", said Rodimus.
"Yes Rodimus, there is. The personality program that was used to create Megatron was written by Alpha Trion."
"By Primus, I can't believe it, but I still don't see why that's bothering you", said Ultra Magnus.
"Alpha Trion also merged that same program with another life force. He merged it with a young Autobot, brought to him near death for repairs", said Optimus. He paused a moment. "His name was Orion Pax. You know him, as Optimus Prime. I was created with the same program that created Megatron."
"Megatron is your brother, your twin", said Rodimus.
"Essentially correct", said Optimus. "During that battle at Autobot City, I never knew why I couldn't pull the trigger. Megatron was helpless. I could have saved countless lives. But I didn't. When he pulled out a weapon, I shot him on instinct alone, never even thinking about it."
At that moment, a voice came over Rodimus's radio.
"Springer to Rodimus, do you want me to lead the next attack? We are hitting a Decepticon supply depot in France. Are you going to join us."
"I'll be right there", said Rodimus.
"No you won't", said Optimus. "I'll lead the attack, you need some repairs Rodimus." With that, Optimus left the command center.
Rodimus looked at Ultra Magnus. "It never gets any easier for him, does it", said Rodimus.
"No, it doesn't. He has given his entire life to the quest for freedom and peace, and has asked for nothing in return. Fate keeps throwing him curves, but he always manages to catch them", said Ultra Magnus.
"I wasn't sure he would recover from losing Elita One", said Rodimus.
"Rodimus, he hasn't", said Ultra Magnus. "He blames himself for her the deaths of everyone he could have saved by killing Megatron, but it is Elita's death that has made it impossible for himself to let go of it." Ultra Magnus paused. "Rodimus, have you ever been in love?"
"No", said Rodimus, have you?"
"I was once", said Ultra Magnus. "She was killed in a Decepticon attack many years ago, long before you were created. I wasn't even their, and still I blamed myself for a long time. It took me a long time to accept that there was nothing I could have done differently that would have saved her."
"But Optimus could have saved Elita", said Rodimus.
"It is an awful truth, but Optimus is right. Had he killed Megatron, Elita and many more would be alive. No one blame's him for it, but until he can forgive himself, he has a long road ahead of him."
"He's one of a kind", said Rodimus. Rodimus wished there was something he could do for Optimus, but he knew there was nothing. Ultra Magnus was right, Optimus needed to forgive himself. Until he did, he would never be able to truly get passed Elita's death.
Soundwave held onto a support beam as the base shook around him. The base was not built to withstand this kind of bombardment, it was only a supply depot.
Soundwave continued down the hall to the hanger where Megatron and Nightbird were.
When he arrived he found them working Skyquake over. "No please, no more", begged Skyquake.
They had been working him over every once in a while since they had left Washington three weeks earlier. Megatron wanted to make him suffer before he killed him.
"Well, I hate to interrupt the party, but I think we had better get out of here", said Soundwave
"Very well", said Megatron. "Order all of our forces to retreat and regroup at Ice Station Omega. We'll make our stand there." Megatron tried to act as if it was a routine order, but there was nothing routine about it, and beneath his calm exterior, anger swelled. He was falling back yet again, and the Earth was slipping away from him. Optimus Prime was beating him again.
He tried to redirect his rage. "I think it time for Skyquake to leave us."
Megatron held his shoulder cannon to Skyquake's head.
"Please Megatron, don't", said Skyquake.
"Give me one good reason why I shouldn't", said Megatron. "Just one reason. I should have killed you years ago."
"I know something, something you can't afford not to know", said Skyquake weakly. He was on the verge of automatic shut down.
"And what would that be", said Megatron.
"I know who helped Soundwave create you", said Skyquake, and then he lost consciousness.
Megatron removed the barrel of his weapon from Skyquake's head. He looked at Soundwave. "Could he know", asked Megatron?
"He's lying", said Nightbird. "He's just trying to save his neck."
"I don't know", said Soundwave. "I would not put it past him to use any ploy, but I must wonder how he would even know to use that as a tactic. It means he knows about your origin. Besides the three of us, I didn't know anyone else knew except whoever aided me in your creation. I thought we had killed all of the rest. Blitzwing would have been the last, and I doubt very much he would have told anyone."
"Very well, we'd better take him with us." Lost in their conversation they failed to notice that the base had stopped shaking.
Just then an alarm sounded.
"The base has been breached", said Soundwave, "we have to get out of here."
Soundwave grabbed Skyquake, and they headed outside. Once outside Soundwave sent the retreat signal to the rest of their forces. They were about to head north when Megatron was thrown to the ground by an explosion.
"Megatron, are you alright", asked Soundwave?
"Megatron", called a familiar voice from across the base. It was Optimus Prime.
"Soundwave, Nightbird, get to Ice Station Omega, I have some unfinished business with Optimus Prime."
"Nightbird and Soundwave took off, carrying Skyquake.
Although a battle raged around them, Optimus Prime saw only Megatron. His first impulse was to fire, to attack before Megatron could even stand, but he couldn't do that. He needed him to know the truth. Optimus moved towards him.
Megatron got to his feet and saw Optimus Prime coming towards him. "Well Optimus, we meet again", said Megatron.
Optimus stopped, only about twenty-five feet from Megatron. "Surrender Megatron. Your forces are depleted, don't sacrifice your troops in a lost cause."
"Surrender? I don't think so Optimus."
"Then listen Megatron, there is something you need to know", said Optimus.
"And what would that be", said Megatron.
"I finally found out why I couldn't bring myself to kill you that day in Autobot City. I shot on instinct, I never was going to destroy you", asked Optimus.
Megatron was ready to fire, but stopped. "We had this conversation once before Optimus, at the San Francisco Power Station. I don't care why you didn't destroy me." Megatron was lying, he did want to know.
"The First Circle created you in an attempt to create a peaceful leader for the Decepticons."
"Yes, and fortunately, they failed", said Megatron.
Optimus was surprised. He had not expected Megatron to know that.
"Do you know who wrote your personality program Megatron", asked Optimus."
"Who would that be Optimus", asked Megatron, Soundwave had never told him who wrote the program, and Megatron had never considered it important enough to ask.
"Alpha Trion created your program Megatron, and he used the same program to create me."
Megatron stared blankly at his enemy. How could this be. Soundwave had never told him any of this. How could he have not told him, about this. Somehow, Megatron knew Optimus was telling him the truth. He could feel that it was true, he had been created by Alpha Trion. "Well then, I guess that makes us brothers Optimus Prime." Megatron tried to hide the rage that was within him. But it did not matter. Regardless of who created them, or how, Megatron was more interested in who had helped Soundwave create him. "Well brother, it's time to die!"
Megatron fired his shoulder cannon at Optimus, but Optimus dodged the shot and rammed his shoulder into Megatron's chest. They both went flying to the ground. Optimus swung a fist at Megatron's face, but it was only a glancing blow. Megatron pushed Optimus off of him, and shot his shoulder cannon at him. The shot, hit Optimus in the leg.
"Optimus", yelled Springer as he ran toward him, a squad of Autobots with him.
"Well Optimus, we'll finish this another time. I've waited a long time to destroy you. Do you think it makes any difference to me that Alpha Trion created us both, or that that was why you were going to let me live? All that matters is that you failed to destroy me, and I still live for the glory of the Decepticon cause."
The words burned. Optimus felt so much guilt. So much of it was because he hadn't killed Megatron. He could have destroyed him that day once and for all. How many had paid the price for his inaction? How many lives had been lost?
"If you really thought telling me would make any difference, then you were on a fools errand." Megatron leapt into the air, and flew northward to join his forces.
Optimus just sat there on the ground. The leg wound was not that severe. Optimus finally admitted to himself what was bothering him so much. Deep down he had thought that perhaps Megatron might be able to find some shred of his original programming left. That perhaps some small amount of good could have come from his not destroying Megatron, but there was none. There was only sorrow and guilt. He had lived with the burden of leadership for millions of years. The guilt of sending his troops, his friends to their death always weighed heavy, but he always knew he could not prevent it, and that they had died for the cause they believed in. But this was different. He could have killed Megatron. He could have destroyed him once and for all so their would be no resurrection. Megatron was right for once. Optimus was a fool for hoping he could ease his conscience. The time had come to accept it, and move on as best he could. It was time to stop dwelling on the past, and fight for the future. The only atonement he could make would be to stop Megatron, and make the universe safe for peace. Megatron had to be stopped.
"Optimus, how bad is it", asked Springer?
"Not bad." Optimus activated his radio. "Optimus Prime to Rodimus Prime."
"Rodimus Prime here, go ahead."
"Rodimus, Megatron's forces are falling back to Ice Station Omega. I want you to get our forces ready for a full scale assault."
"I'll get right on it, Optimus."
It was late, almost two in the morning. Optimus, Rodimus, Ultra Magnus, Kup, Arcee, Blaster, Onslaught, and Spike sat around a conference table, discussing the battle plan.
"Does that do it", asked Rodimus?
"I think so", said Optimus. "Let's just go through it one more time to make sure we've all got it."
"Alright", said Spike with a yawn.
"Keeping you up Spike", asked Rodimus?
"Sorry Spike, I sometimes forget you need sleep", said Optimus.
"Saving the world is more important than my sleeping."
Optimus stood up. "Alright. This operation will be code named Freedom. Ice Station Omega is the largest single structure installation of any kind ever built on this planet. The Decepticons have been building it since they took control of the Earth, and have made it their top priority. Fortunately for us, they have not had time to complete it. It measures ten miles across, and eight miles back into the mountains. The base is only accessible from three sides, as it is built right into some of the most treacherous, snow covered mountains in the world. The front of the base, the South side, is very heavily defended. Fortunately, the West and East side's defenses are not yet complete. At precisely noon today, just under ten hours from now, phase one of operation Freedom will begin. Onslaught will lead the First Circle and Autobot air forces in an all out assault on the base. Their primary purpose will be to weaken the defenses so the ground forces can move in and storm the base. We out number them, but I fear they will fight till the last of them fall. We can not count on a surrender. A frontal assault on Ice Station Omega would be suicide, even when their defenses are weakened. Phase two will be our ground assault. Kup and Arcee will split up the rest of our forces and attack from the East and West sides. They will begin phase two, exactly one hour after the initial attack. Their mission is to penetrate the base and take it over. Phase three will begin at the same time as phase two. Our air forces will shift their attacks to the West and East sides, to give cover to our ground assault. The Earth Defense forces will attack the base head on. Hit and run air attacks, and long range ground attacks only. It will be enough to keep some of their forces occupied while our forces enter the base. Spike will command the Earth defense forces. Ultra Magnus will be in command of the overall offensive."
"Optimus, sounds fine", said Rodimus, "but, if you don't mind my asking, what are you and I going to do?"
"We're going after Megatron", said Optimus.
"How do you intend to get to him", asked Rodimus? "It's not like we can just go in the back door."
"Actually, we can", said Optimus. "No army or large attack force could attack the rear of the base. Ground forces would get stuck in snow drifts and freeze, and the high unpredictable mountain winds would make an aerial attack hazardous at best. However, for just that reason, it is completely undefended. You and I will leave immediately. Ultra Magnus, can all of our forces be ready for the air attack at noon?"
"We will be ready", said Ultra Magnus.
"Very well, then Rodimus and I will leave immediately. Good luck", said Optimus.
There was much to do. Everyone got up and left the conference room. Everyone that is except for Rodimus.
Optimus sat down in a chair. "Something on your mind Rodimus", asked Optimus?
"Optimus, you know damn well what's on my mind. Everyone who was here had the same question I do, but none of them would ask it. Why are we going after Megatron? Once we have the base, he'll either surrender, or be killed in the battle."
"You think so", said Optimus, half asking, half making a statement. "Megatron will not surrender, and he will not die in the battle. He claims to fight for the Decepticon cause, but that is only because it mirrors his own. He wants to rule the universe, and nothing less. The plans for Ice Station Omega included a hanger with a large shuttle. When Megatron realizes the battle is lost, he'll abandon his troops, and save himself. I promised Blitzwing I would not let Megatron win. It's a promise I intend to keep. Megatron will lose this battle. He is outnumbered, and has nowhere to retreat to. But more important than winning the battle, I must prevent him from fighting any more battles, ever."
"Optimus, you had a chance to destroy him once. You weren't going to do it then, what makes you think you will now."
Optimus said nothing for a moment. "Rodimus, when I didn't kill Megatron, how many others did I sentence to death? How many died because of my inaction? The people of Earth lost their planet. Megatron can not be allowed to live. He must not be allowed to live for the good of every peaceful being in the Universe. If he escapes today, even if he disappears for a millennium, he will return, and peace everywhere will be shattered. It is my destiny to stop him. All I had to do was pull the trigger." Optimus paused. "One laser blast, and it would have been over. Now I know why I didn't do it, and it's no excuse."
Rodimus walked over and put a hand on Optimus's shoulder. "Optimus, you are far too hard on yourself. Maybe you should sit this one out. No one would blame you for taking a step back. You've given so much, and received nothing but pain in return. Give yourself a break. You deserve it."
"If only it were that simple. Rodimus, you have lived many thousands of years, but by Transformers standards, you are still young. I have been fighting this war for so long, you can't understand. I never wanted to be a soldier, much less a leader, but that was my destiny, that was why I was created. I was created to destroy Megatron, and it's about time I accepted that. Carrying the Matrix gives you insight into things. The Universe, although it seems like so much chaos, is actually running with clockwork efficiency. We all have a destiny Rodimus. In many ways, my life is not my own." Optimus paused. "Rodimus, how many Decepticons have you killed."
Rodimus looked down towards the floor for a moment. "Too many", said Rodimus. "Far too many. I try not to think about it."
"I never wanted to take a life, any life. I've killed more Decepticons than you can possibly imagine, Rodimus. I live every day knowing what I've done. As the humans would say, I have their blood on my hands, as well as the blood of every Autobot I've sent into battle, and have not seen return. I used to be able to see the faces of every one of them when I closed my eyes. I don't know what bothers me more, having seen all those faces for so long, or that I can't see some of them anymore. Autobots and Decepticons have come and gone, only a handful of the first troops under my command still live. Megatron and myself are the only constants. Call it good and evil, light and dark, right and wrong, Megatron and I are two sides of the same coin. If that coin ever lands, Primus help the universe if it falls in Megatron's favor. Megatron must be stopped. It's not revenge, I seek, although I know many might see it as such, but my very existence, my purpose is to stop Megatron, and that is what I must do. If it costs me my life, then so be it."
"Optimus, I just don't want to see anything happen to you. I've seen the way the last few months have been for you. Losing Elita, losing the Earth. We need you Optimus, more than we need Megatron destroyed. I need you Optimus. I'm always told that I will someday succeed you as leader. I don't know if I can do it."
"Rodimus, if there is one thing that does not worry me, it's that you will make an excellent leader some day." Optimus got up and headed for the door, but he stopped. "Rodimus, I don't intend to be passing you the Matrix anytime soon."
Optimus left the room. "I hope you're right", said Rodimus to himself. Rodimus thought about what Ultra Magnus had said. He considered trying to talk to Optimus. But he did not know what to say. Optimus had to forgive himself, and unfortunately, no one could do it for him.
Megatron read the reports on the monitor on his desk. Ice Station Omega's main defenses were complete, but not yet automated. The West and East sides of the base had very little in the way of defenses. He would have to concentrate his more powerful troops there, and leave the rest to operate the main defenses. But it did not matter. He knew this battle would be lost, he would be forced to retreat again.
As he dwelled on the coming battle, he felt what he thought was a small earthquake.
"Megatron, did you feel that", came Nightbird's voice over Megatron's radio.
"Yes, what was it", asked Megatron?
"Internal sensors report an explosion in Soundwave's lab. I'll dispatch a team to investigate", said Nightbird.
"Negative", said Megatron. "Seal off the area, I will investigate myself. Megatron out."
Megatron ran down the corridor of Ice Station Omega. Soundwave had been working on Skyquake, so Megatron ordered the section sealed until he gave further orders, and went to check the situation himself. The door to the repair bay was open, blown out from the inside.
"Soundwave, what happened", called Megatron from the doorway. There was no response.
Megatron cautiously entered the smoky room. He saw Soundwave sitting against a wall.
"What happened Soundwave?", asked Megatron as he went to where Soundwave sat. Soundwave was leaking energeon from his chest.
"Skyquake had a fail safe against anyone trying to access his memory circuits", said Soundwave weakly. It was probably put in by Unicron when he reconfigured his body. I probably have one myself."
"Why were you trying to access his memory circuits", asked Megatron?
"He is still alive, but I can not repair him. I was trying to find out what he knows about your creation", said Soundwave.
"How badly are you hurt", asked Megatron?
"If we don't act quickly, the wound will be fatal."
Megatron helped Soundwave to his feet, and led him over to a repair table. Skyquake's body still smoldered from the explosion on the other repair table.
Megatron picked up a tool from beside the bench.
"No Megatron, you will not be able to repair me. The circuitry Unicron used when he reconfigured me is unlike any other I have ever dealt with. It is the same reason I can not repair Skyquake."
"What do you want me to do then", asked Megatron?
"Megatron, in the storage area in back, there are two large steel crates. One is unmarked, the other bares my name. I need that one."
Megatron nodded, and headed for the storage area. He found the two metal crates. Each had three connection ports on the top, and a single button, but appeared otherwise to be sealed shut. He picked up the crate Soundwave wanted, and brought it back and placed it beside the repair table.
"Now what", asked Megatron.
"In the cabinet over the work bench, there is a device. I need it."
Megatron retrieved the device. It looked like a helmet, and had three cables coming from the top.
Soundwave took the helmet from Megatron, and placed it on his head. "Megatron, connect the three cables to the ports on the top of the...", said Soundwave.
"Soundwave", are you alright", asked Megatron?
"Circuits failing. Not much time."
Megatron connected the three cables to the box, and pressed the button. The steel box started to hum softly, and the three cables and the helmet glowed dull purple. Soundwave's eyes glowed brightly for a moment, and then went dark.
"Soundwave?"
Megatron scanned his body but their were no power readings. He was too late.
"Goodbye my friend", said Megatron.
Megatron turned toward the bed where Skyquake lay. He transformed into tank mode, and put the turret beside Skyquake's head. "I don't care what you know, this time, I'll kill you for good."
Megatron was about to fire, when he heard the shriek of metal against metal behind him. Megatron transformed and turned around.
The metal box was torn open, and behind it stood Soundwave. The old Soundwave, once again a tape player.
"Thank you Megatron. I'd almost had it", said Soundwave.
"But how", asked Megatron. He saw the lifeless body still lying on the repair table.
"I have been working on a new body, much like my old one. When Unicron was destroyed, I started planning this immediately. Fortunately, I just finished this body, or I would have been done for."
"Excellent", said Megatron. "What about Skyquake."
"I have an idea that might work." Soundwave walked over to his computer terminal, and pressed some buttons. "According to this, I might have the parts I need."
"Parts for what", asked Megatron?
"I am going to build Skyquake a new body."
"Won't that take too long", asked Megatron? "According to these readings, he has only a few hours left."
"I intend to use parts from some of our fallen troops. Several of our troops, whose bodies were similar in design to Skyquake's original body are in the morgue. I can use them to build him a new body. He will be Starscream again."
"Just what we need. Soundwave, what is in that other box?"
"Nothing important, just another project."
"Very well Soundwave, if our only option is to build that traitorous fool a new body, then proceed. When you are done, put Starscream in stasis aboard the shuttle. Alert the Xformers to stay close to the shuttle. If the battle goes as I fear it will, we will need to make a quick getaway."
"Understood", said Soundwave. "Megatron, if we are forced to retreat, what are your plans?"
"I don't know Soundwave, but I can guarantee they involve one thing."
"What is that", asked Soundwave?
"The destruction of Optimus Prime."
The icy wind blew hard along the mountainside. The snow fell hard, and the wind just made it feel even colder than it was. High above, Skyfire swooped down toward the mountainside.
Optimus and Rodimus opened the cargo bay doors.
"Thanks for the lift Skyfire", said Optimus.
"No problem, any time. Good luck."
"We'll need it", said Rodimus.
Optimus, for just a moment considered turning back. Was it really worth the risk to stop Megatron this way? He had other options. He could have had a shuttle waiting to intercept Megatron's shuttle. He could have sent a strike team in to destroy the shuttle on the launch pad. Of course, none of those plans would definitely be successful, and he would have to rely on others to carry them out. Stopping Megatron was his responsibility, and no one else's.
Optimus and Rodimus leapt from Skyfire, and landed on the side of the mountain. They looked up to see Skyfire rocketing away.
"Well, what now", asked Rodimus?
"We can climb over the mountain, and save an hour, or we can go around it", said Optimus. Optimus retracted his left fist, and produced a winch and claw.
"Well, I guess that answers that question", said Rodimus, as he produced his own winch in place of his hand.
They began climbing. Each of them shot their claw up the side of the mountain, and then wound it in, walking up the side of the mountain.
"If there is anything I can say to talk you out of this Optimus, just tell me, I'll say it, and we can go home", said Rodimus.
"There's nothing you can say." Optimus was sure of what he had to do, but he wasn't sure he should have brought Rodimus along. Perhaps he should have left him in charge of the assault, and come alone. It was too late to change his mind, and there was no use in second guessing his own decisions now.
After a half hour, they reached the top of the mountain.
"There it is", said Optimus.
Rodimus looked off into the distance. About twenty miles away he could see another mountain.
"There's what", asked Rodimus? "All I see is a mountain."
"On this side it's a mountain, but Ice Station Omega is built right into the other side", said Optimus.
"I don't suppose there is a nice paved, plowed road", asked Rodimus?
"No such luck", chuckled Optimus. "We'll have to repel down the side of this mountain, walk to the other one, and climb it."
"I wish I'd brought along my snow tires", said Rodimus.
"Quit complaining. The warm packs Percepter gave us should keep us from freezing up. Just don't use them all at once", said Optimus.
The two of them started slowly down the mountain, ever closer to their destination.
In Megatron's command room, Nightbird read the reports of enemy movements. Things did not look good, They were planning an assault.
The door of the command room opened, and Megatron walked through.
"Nightbird, report", said Megatron.
"The Autobots appear to be massing troops near our East and West sides. There appears to be movement of aerial troops to the south. I believe they will attack head on with an air assault, and then use their ground forces to storm the base from the sides."
"I believe you are right. What do we do about it", said Megatron.
"We save ourselves, and get out of here before we are annihilated. We do not have enough operational defenses, or troops to repel this attack. We will lose the earth", said Nightbird.
"You lack faith my dear", said Megatron.
"As the humans say, bull shit. You know as well as I if we stay here, the Autobots will melt us down."
"Perhaps, but if we are going to make a late escape, I don't want our troops to know we will leave them behind. Soundwave is alerting the remaining Xformers, I am taking them with us. Starscream will be coming as well."
"You mean Skyquake, don't you", said Nightbird. "What happened down in the lab."
"Nothing of consequence", said Megatron.
"Move our troops into position for the attack. We have little choice but to wait for the attack to come. We are too badly outnumbered to go on the offensive."
Nightbird left the room to coordinate the placement of troops. As he watched her leave he thought for a fleeting moment how beautiful she was, but there was not time for trivial thoughts. A battle was coming.
Megatron sat in his command chair. This battle would be lost. There was nothing he could do to prevent it. His army would be destroyed. They would die in the battle, or be captured. Optimus Prime had once again snatched his victory from him. How close he had come. If he had held Earth for just a little longer, he would have had the satellite defense system operational. Optimus Prime would pay for this.
There would be another time he vowed. With Soundwave and Nightbird they would rebuild their army, and they would take Cybertron and Earth, and rule the Universe. It would just take a little longer.
At exactly noon, the Autobot and First Circle air forces, lead by Onslaught attacked Ice Station Omega. Meanwhile, on the North end of the complex, Optimus and Rodimus were just reaching the summit of the mountain that stood between them and Ice Station Omega.
Optimus looked down toward the base. They just needed to repel down the mountain, onto the roof of the installation. Optimus could see flashes in the fog off in the distance. It was just after noon. The battle had begun.
"I guess they have started the attack", said Rodimus.
"Yes. It's just a matter of time before Megatron decides to make his escape."
"Optimus, I know this seems a little late to ask, but wouldn't the satellite defenses stop Megatron's escape?"
"Possibly, but Megatron and Soundwave are too smart not to have built themselves a way through. I've had our technicians looking through the control systems of the satellite's, and the can't find anything, but I know it's there. The satellites won't stop Megatron."
"There goes my last argument for turning back", said Rodimus. Rodimus anchored his claw to the mountain, and began to lower himself down.
Optimus did the same, and in only a few minutes, they were standing on top of Ice Station Omega.
Optimus looked around. This part of the base's roof was completely flat. It was covered about a foot deep in snow. In the distance Optimus could see the dome covering the launch pad. That is where Megatron would make his escape from. "The plans for the station show an air vent in this area. We should be able to get in that way."
"If I remember correctly, from the schematics, it should be right about here", said Rodimus, as he stomped his foot on the snow. The vent cover beneath it gave way, and left a hole in the snow covered roof.
"After you", said Rodimus.
Optimus jumped down into the hole. At the bottom, he found a large open area with air vents leading in all directions. They were not very big, but Optimus knew they could crawl through them.
Rodimus came down right behind Optimus. "Well, should we cut our way out of here", asked Rodimus.
"No, we'll take this vent, it should lead right to the armory.
"We can't fit through there", said Rodimus.
"Sure we can, it might just be a little tight."
Optimus got on his hands and knees, and started down the vent. Rodimus followed.
"Optimus, why are we going to the armory anyway?"
"I have a plan, but I will need something to make it work."
If Optimus was right, before Megatron made his escape, he would move any troops he had in the hanger away, so they wouldn't see him making his escape. He wanted a chance to face Megatron one on one, but he knew Megatron would have at least Soundwave and Nightbird with him. They would need to separate them if he was to face Megatron alone.
On the South end of the complex, phase one was nearing completion. In five minutes, the ground forces would attack. Kup and the Thing were going over their attack plan.
"I'll lead the charge at the main East entrance. You, take a small force and attack the less heavily guarded entrance half a mile to the North. They will have their defenses concentrated at the main gate, and hopefully you can get in, and we'll have them on two fronts", finished Kup.
The Thing looked at the map Kup was holding. "Sounds good to me. You keep these guys busy here, and I'll get in behind them, and they won't know what hit them.
"Take a team of six with you", said Kup.
"No, I'll go myself. I can do more damage that way."
"If that's what you want", said Kup.
The Thing left Kup, and headed to the other entrance. Kup activated his communicator.
"Kup to Arcee, respond please."
"Arcee here. Are you all set for the party", she asked.
"I was about to ask you the same thing", said Kup. "We're all set. Good luck Arcee."
"To you too."
Inside Megatron's command room, Megatron grabbed onto the operations table as the base shook around him.
"They've been attacking from the air for almost an hour, what are they waiting for", said Nightbird, "why don't the ground forces attack."
"They are softening us up. They know they have us. I guess we shouldn't wait around any longer", said Megatron.
Megatron activated his communicator. "Soundwave, respond."
"Megatron, I have finished preparing the shuttle. I suggest we move our troops away from the Hanger."
"Very well, get the Xformers and meet me in the command room. I will clear the hanger, and surrounding areas."
Megatron watched the reports come through from the battle. The aerial barrage was taking a heavy toll, and word was just coming in that the ground forces were attacking the East and West entrances. Fortunately, due to the massive size of Ice Station Omega, they were over two miles away.
Megatron activated the base's emergency radio frequency. "Megatron to all Decepticons in sections 17 to 128, go to the East and West entrances and reinforce our troops. Megatron to Runamuck, alert all our troops in the hanger to reinforce the front lines."
"Understood", responded Runamuck.
Several minutes later, Soundwave and the Xformers arrived at the command room.
"Our troops will stay behind to cover our escape", said Megatron, "They just don't know it yet." The Xformers chuckled a bit. "Everything we need is already aboard. Nightbird, Soundwave, Xformers, go to the hanger. I will be there shortly."
"Is something wrong Megatron", asked Nightbird?
"No, I will meet you shortly", said Megatron.
Soundwave and Nightbird left, with the Xformers close behind them. Megatron went into the elevator. "Observation deck."
The elevator closed, and began to rise. The Command room was built right below tower one, one of the many towers on top of the base. Megatron emerged from the elevator onto the observation deck. It was open to the air, no windows, but had an overhang that kept most of the snow out. Megatron looked out toward the South. There was a lot of fog, but he could hear explosions in the distance. From this base he could have ruled the universe. Optimus Prime had once again destroyed his plans. But he knew that this would not be the end. With Nightbird and Soundwave, he would keep his vision of total domination of the Universe alive, and some day he would attain it.
Optimus and Rodimus moved carefully down the corridor. They had found exactly what Optimus wanted in the armory, some Decepticon energeon nets.
Optimus raised his hand, signaling Rodimus to stop as they approached the hanger. Optimus carefully looked around the corner at the hanger door. It was open, but he could only see in a little bit from this angle. He could see only three Decepticons inside.
Optimus moved back out of sight. "I see three of them, but I don't have a very good view. There could be more of them.
"It's your call Optimus", said Rodimus. "I'm with you."
Every time Optimus had to make a decision that put someone else in jeopardy, it got harder and harder.
Just as Optimus was about to go around the corner, and rush the hanger, he saw Runamuck coming down the hall from the opposite direction and enter the hanger. "Megatron wants everyone to split up and reinforce the West and East entrances."
Suddenly, Runamuck came out of the hanger, followed by about twenty Decepticons.
"Let's go", said Optimus when they were a safe distance away.
Optimus and Rodimus entered the hanger. It was fairly large, but it was only occupied by a single shuttle.
Optimus went to the hangers command station. It included a closed circuit monitor to monitor the hanger entrance from outside.
"Rodimus, up above the entrance is an observation deck. Get up there with the nets. Put them on maximum. I want anyone who comes through that door incapacitated, except Megatron. He's mine", said Optimus.
"Are you sure Optimus? We could just get them all with the nets."
"No Rodimus. This is something I have to do. Get up there, I'll monitor the entrance, and let you know who's coming."
Optimus knew that Rodimus was right. They could probably incapacitate Megatron and take him prisoner, but what would that accomplish? As long as Megatron lived, peace was threatened. Optimus was not going to run from his destiny anymore.
Megatron walked down the corridor toward the hanger. The Autobots had breached the base, and it was only a matter of time before they got to the shuttle.
Megatron entered the Hanger. He didn't see Nightbird, Soundwave or the Xformers. Something was not right, he thought, but before he had a chance to act, the door closed behind him.
"We meet again Megatron", said Optimus as he stepped out from behind some storage crates. Megatron took a few steps toward him. He could now see Soundwave and the others, covered in energeon netting.
"Let's make this the last time Optimus." Megatron dropped his fusion cannon. He did not want to risk hitting the shuttle.
Optimus dropped his laser rifle. This was too personal for laser weapons. Optimus and Megatron walked slowly toward each other. They were like two lions, each looking for the perfect moment to strike.
Rodimus watched from above the hanger door. Optimus had made him promise he would not interfere, under any circumstances The last thing that Optimus had said still echoed in his mind. "If anything should happen to me, you get out of here. Don't try and help me, save yourself." Those words just wouldn't go away.
Megatron struck first. He tackled Optimus, and they both went crashing to the floor.
As they rolled around the floor, they pummeled each other with their fists. Then Optimus managed to get his legs underneath Megatron, and he threw him off. He landed against the wall, but got up quickly, as did Optimus Prime.
"It's not too late for you to surrender Megatron", said Optimus.
"Have you lost your mind completely?", asked Megatron, as he picked up a large metal pipe from the floor.
Optimus picked up a similar pipe. "No Megatron, but I just felt you should have the option", said Optimus. He swung the pipe at Megatron, but Megatron dodged it, and swung at Optimus. The two battled for what seemed like an eternity to Rodimus. Each one landing many blows on the other.
Then, Megatron swung his pipe, and missed Optimus. Optimus dropped his pipe, and charged at Megatron, driving his shoulder into Megatron's chest, and knocking him against the wall. They fought for a moment, then Optimus hoisted Megatron above his head, and threw him into a stack of fuel containers. Optimus retrieved his laser rifle from where he had dropped it, and shot at one of the containers. It burst into flame, and quickly spread to the other containers. Optimus heard Megatron scream once, and then silence, only the crackle of the flame was to be heard. Megatron was motionless within the inferno. He was totally engulfed in flame.
"Megatron tried to move, but the flames had burned through too much of his internal circuitry. His power conduits were fusing, and it was only a matter of minutes until his computer core would overheat. He tried to scream again, but he had lost control of all functions. This was truly the end he thought.
Only a few feet away, Optimus stood, looking into the flames. "Goodbye Megatron", said Optimus. He watched the flames. It was over. Megatron was dead. Finally, he could have some peace.
"Optimus, lookout", called Rodimus. Optimus turned around, and was hit in the chest with a missile from Soundwave's shoulder cannon. He fell to the ground unconscious.
Rodimus had been so intent on the battle, he did not notice that Soundwave and Nightbird had cut through the energeon nets. Before Rodimus could move to help Optimus, the Xformers were on him.
Soundwave and Nightbird grabbed fire extinguishers, and put out the flames. Soundwave picked up Megatron's charred body. The once shiny green steel, was now blackened. Energeon leaked from everywhere. The heat from Megatron burned Soundwave's chest plate, but he did not even flinch. He carried his leader's body toward the shuttle, Nightbird was right with him.
"Is he alive", asked Nightbird, her voice betraying her concern.
"I don't know", said Soundwave. "Xformers, leave him, we must take off immediately."
The Xformers left Rodimus, they had given him a good beating, but did not have time to do any real damage.
The Xformers boarded the shuttle, and the shuttle began to lift off. The massive dome opened, and snow began to fall in the hanger.
Rodimus fired at the shuttle. He tried to aim for the engine, but he was firing wildly trying to stop them. He managed to hit an energy conduit. Inside the shuttle, the explosion ripped through several interior compartments, but the shuttle kept going, and flew out of the dome.
As Rodimus raced to Optimus's side, he activated his radio. "Rodimus Prime to any Autobot or First Circle troops, a shuttle has just lifted of from Ice Station Omega, it must be stopped." Rodimus repeated his order, and then went to Optimus. The wound was not that severe, but Optimus was unconscious. Was it over, wondered Rodimus. He didn't know if Megatron was dead or not. If he wasn't, he didn't know what Optimus would do.
Aboard the shuttle, Soundwave and Nightbird took Megatron to the repair bay while the Xformers piloted the ship.
Soundwave started connecting Megatron to the life support system.
"Nightbird, you must show the Xformers how to get through the shields. They do not know the correct shield frequencies that will allow us to pass."
"I want to stay with Megatron", she said. Her normally calm, cool demeanor was gone, as she hovered over her love. "Megatron, I will not leave you", she said.
"If you don't, we all die. I can't leave him, now get to the bridge, that's an order", commanded Soundwave.
Nightbird nodded hesitantly. She looked back for a moment when she reached the door. Soundwave could see the pain in her eyes.
Soundwave worked furiously. Megatron was alive but barely, he finished connecting life support, and stabilized his life signs. He was hanging on by a thread. Soundwave had a plan, but before he could act on it, his communicator sounded.
"Wolverine to Soundwave, how are we supposed to get through that shield?"
"Nightbird was supposed to come up there and show you", answered Soundwave.
"She's not here. We took some damage from Rodimus Prime as we lifted off, we're barely holding together, explosions and radiation on decks B through D, and we lost our secondary energy conduit."
Soundwave went to the computer terminal, and entered the proper shield frequencies. "I'm sending the shield frequencies to the bridge, set them, and get us out of here. I'll find Nightbird."
"Understood."
Soundwave knew their was not much time to save Megatron, but he had to find out what happened to Nightbird. He headed toward the bridge. He hadn't gone far when he found her. An energy conduit must have exploded on the exterior of the ship causing a chain reaction inside the ship. Nightbird must have been right next to it when it exploded. Soundwave picked her up and carried her to the repair bay. She was barely conscious.
"Soundwave, how bad is it", she asked.
"It's very bad. Soundwave looked over the readouts from the examination tables scanners."
"Nightbird", began Soundwave slowly. "I can repair you, but to do that, I must put you on life support."
"Well then do it", she said.
"The shuttle only has one life support unit, and if I use it on you, Megatron will die. But I'm not sure I can save him at all." Soundwave paused for a moment. "If I save you, Megatron will die. If I do not save you, Megatron may die anyway." Soundwave was at a loss for words.
"Then you know what you have to do", she said. "You must try to save Megatron. Soundwave, hand me my short sword."
Soundwave removed her sword from it's place on her back, and placed it in her hand.
"Soundwave, you must never tell Megatron of this. Tell him I was killed by the explosion."
"Nightbird, I do not know if I can do that, but I'll try", said Soundwave.
"Thank you", she said. She held the sword in her hands, the hilt above her head, the tip to her chest. She said something in Japanese that Soundwave did not understand. He turned away, he could not watch. He heard the sound of steal cut through steal, and as he looked back, he saw her arms fall down at her sides, the sword sticking out of her chest, with the blade embedded in her computer core. Her eyes flickered for a moment, and then she was gone.
"Your sacrifice will not be in vain. I swear it", said Soundwave.
Soundwave turned his attention to Megatron, and went to retrieve the steel box he had brought on board. How ironic it was that he had told Megatron his other project was unimportant. It was now more important than ever.
Operation freedom was a huge success. Autobot and First Circle casualties were light, in spite of the fierce opposition. Some of the Decepticons surrendered, but unfortunately, many fought to the end.
Optimus awoke to find himself in a repair bay in Ice Station Omega. Rodimus was there.
"Optimus, how do you feel", asked Rodimus?
"I'm alright." Optimus started to get up.
"No you don't. Percepter wants you to rest a while", said Rodimus.
"Rodimus, the last thing I remember was Megatron, he was engulfed in flames. Is he dead?"
"Well, I'm....", started Rodimus.
"Is he dead or isn't he", asked Optimus?
"I don't know. Soundwave, Nightbird, and the Xformers escaped. They took his body, but he was so badly burned, I don't see how he could have survived. We found Skyquake's body, but it looks like he was given a new body. I don't think he's dead."
Optimus did not care about Skyquake. "But you don't know for sure that Megatron is dead.", said Optimus.
"No Optimus, I'm sorry. You were right, they had a way through the defense shield."
"I'd like to be alone for a while Rodimus", said Optimus.
"Sure, no problem." Rodimus left Optimus alone.
He had failed again. Megatron was not dead. Optimus knew he wasn't. He could feel it, but the worst part was the he knew Megatron would be back.
Soundwave placed the odd helmet on Megatron's head. His face was hardly recognizable. Soundwave pressed the button on the steel box, and waited patiently. A few minutes later, the box exploded open.
"Megatron, you live", said Soundwave.
"Yes Soundwave." Megatron looked at his hands and arms. There was no mistaking the silver gray coloring. "I'm my old self again."
"Yes Megatron", said Soundwave.
"Excellent." Megatron looked around the room for a moment. "Where's Nightbird", he asked?
Soundwave looked at the ground. "Megatron, I don't know how to tell you this." Soundwave stopped.
"What is it Soundwave?"
"She's gone", said Soundwave.
Megatron just stared at Soundwave for a minute. "How", asked Megatron?
"As we were taking off, Rodimus Prime destroyed one of the shuttles power conduits. The explosions killed her."
"Leave me alone now Soundwave."
Soundwave nodded, and turned to leave.
"I'm going to kill them both Soundwave. I will rip Optimus Prime and Rodimus Prime to pieces."
The pain was evident in his eyes, but Soundwave was not about to say anything. Soundwave left Megatron alone.
Megatron walked over to a view port. He could see the stars rush by. "Optimus and Rodimus Prime will both die Nightbird. I swear I will avenge you."
"Well, began Uatu, In the next year, the people of Earth were gradually able to return. The Decepticons had done a lot of damage, and it took a long time to rebuild many cities, but in just under a year, the people of Earth were home, and had formed a new global government. Percepter was able to use the equipment in Megatron's lab to send the Thing back to his own dimension. Life on Earth was returning to normal.
On Cybertron, all members of the First Circle were given a full pardon. As for the few Decepticons who were captured, many committed suicide before a decision was made as to what should be done. The few who were left agreed to live under conditions set by Optimus Prime. They had to stay on Cybertron, and were not allowed to possess weapons of any kind, but beyond that, they were given no further punishment. Much construction was begun on Cybertron, and it was hoped that one day the planet might be returned to it's former glory. Also, archeological expeditions were planned to explore long closed area deep within the planet.
On Earth, it was decided that a memorial to all those who died in the great war to retake the Earth was to be built. Now, on the first anniversary of the battle of Ice Station Omega, Optimus Prime was to dedicate the memorial.
Optimus rolled down the highway towards Los Angeles. Today was a day Optimus had not been looking forward too. He was to dedicate a memorial to all those who had died in the battle to retake the Earth. It seemed so hollow a victory. The Earth was free again, and it's people were home, but he had failed to stop Megatron again. He knew that Megatron was still alive, and as long as Megatron lived, Optimus could never be sure that it would not happen again.
Optimus arrived at the site of the memorial. It was early, and he would not have to make his speech for almost four hours. No one was there yet. The memorial was a large park with several monuments lining the outside, and one lying in the center. Optimus walked around and looked at the different monuments. There was one that bore the name of every human who was killed in the retaking of Earth. One had the names of the Autobots who had died, and one for the members of the First Circle who had died. Some were dedicated to particular battles. The one that Optimus wanted to see was Blitzwing's memorial. Optimus looked up at the huge statue. This particular statue was the only one that Optimus requested be included in the memorial. After all, without Blitzwing, the First Circle would never have come into play, and Megatron would likely have been in control of the Earth for good.
"I'm sorry Blitzwing", said Optimus. "Megatron didn't win, but I fear someday he will have another chance."
Optimus then went to the statue at the center of the memorial. It was decided that this should be as much a memorial to those who survived, as for those who did not. In the center, there were two statues standing side by side. He walked up to the two statues. They were of himself and Rodimus Prime. The inscription on the base read, "May everyone on Earth never forget all the heroes who saved her." Optimus just stared for a while.
"Alpha Trion, there are days I wish you had never created me", Optimus said out loud. "I don't deserve this, I failed to destroy Megatron, I know he still lives. I am no hero. I just did my duty. I did what I had to do. Blitzwing was a hero. He took an awfully big risk, and he paid for it with his life. Me, I just failed once again."
"You know Optimus, it's not good to talk to yourself", said Rodimus. Rodimus walked up beside Optimus.
"How long have you been there Rodimus", asked Optimus?
"Long enough", said Rodimus. "You're far too hard on yourself Optimus. I know you think Megatron's alive, but so what?" Rodimus paused. "You're probably right. Without Blitzwing, we would never have succeeded, but what you don't see is that without you, we never would have succeeded either."
"But I let him live Rodimus, and I had a chance to correct my mistake, and I blew it. If I had pulled that trigger, in Autobot City, everyone listed on those stones would be alive, and there would have been no need for anyone to be a hero, and...", Optimus paused. "Sorry Rodimus, I must sound like a broken record."
"And what Optimus", said Rodimus?
Optimus turned away. "And Elita would be alive."
"Elita's death is not your fault."
"I know that Rodimus", said Optimus.
"Do you", asked Rodimus? "You say that, but I don't think you believe it. You've got to let go of the guilt Optimus."
Optimus knew deep down that Rodimus was right, but it was one thing to know it, accepting it was something else entirely.
Optimus gave his speech later that day, and then he headed back to Autobot City, but on the way back, he had something to do that was long overdue. The last year he had been so busy, he had not had a chance to go back to Mount Trion. Optimus walked up the hill and deactivated the invisibility shield on Elita's statue.
"I'm sorry I haven't been here in so long. I've been so busy this last year, rebuilding this planet has been a monumental undertaking." Optimus paused a moment. "But that's not why I haven't been here. Elita, I failed again, and I couldn't face you. Megatron still lives." Rodimus tells me that I am too hard on myself, but I don't know. How many lives could I have saved. I know I will face Megatron again. I know I will have another chance to stop his evil ways for good. I know I must do that." Optimus paused. "I love you so much Elita, and each day, I find it harder to be without you."
Optimus suddenly felt strange, and as it had before, his chest opened, and the Autobot Matrix of Leadership floated in the air in front of him, and the image of Alpha Trion appeared behind it.
"Optimus, Rodimus is right. You can not blame yourself. If anyone is to blame, it is I", said Alpha Trion. "I should have told you about Megatron. I should have warned you. But that is in the past, and we can not change the past."
"I know we can't change the past. I would give anything if I could. I would go back and kill Megatron in Autobot City, and Elita would be alive today", said Optimus.
"Optimus, I know that you are full of doubt, but there is no time for that now", said Alpha Trion. "I come with a warning from the Matrix."
"A warning from the Matrix", said Optimus. "What do you mean?"
"Optimus, since I became one with the Matrix, a great many things have become known to me. There are many things I can not tell you, so you will just have to trust me. The Matrix, has foreseen something in the future, and it was important enough to send me with a warning. Megatron does still live, and one day, perhaps many years from now, he will learn a secret, a secret that could enable him to enslave the Universe, and defeat all who oppose him. I can give you no further details Optimus Prime, save one. You must seek out the temple of Primus. Only there, can you learn what you need to know. For you must learn the true nature of the Matrix, and learn of the true origins of the Transformers, and only in the temple of Primus, can you find that out. For only there, can you find the Third Prophecy."
"Alpha Trion, you speak of legends, myths. Are you telling me the old stories are all true? I have always believed in Primus, and when Rodimus fulfilled the Second Prophecy, it only reaffirmed my faith", said Optimus. "But are you saying that the burial place of Primus still exists?"
"I can tell you no more, but a final warning. Beware the Betrayer. He who betrayed Primus, for he is your worst enemy." Alpha Trion's image vanished, and the Matrix returned to it's place in Optimus's chest.
The Temple of Primus was said to have been one of the first structures constructed on Cybertron. Legend said it was the final resting place of Primus. Since Cybertron had been built up over many millions of years, the temple was now said to be buried deep within the planet. The teachings of Primus were the very foundation of the Autobots way of life, and the Prophecies were said to be the rewards. The First Prophecy was known as the Covenant of Primus, and told of a great threat to the universe, and how it would be saved. The Second Prophecy told of the coming of a chosen one to light Cybertron's darkest hour, a prophecy Rodimus Prime had fulfilled. The Third Prophecy, however, was a mystery. It was also called the Lost Prophecy. It was the one Primus was to deliver the day he was murdered by the one known as the Betrayer.
Optimus sat on the ground in the warm sun. An already uncertain future was now even more so.
"The Earth is safe", began Uatu, "but Optimus Prime is still haunted by the past, and now Alpha Trion's warning leaves him haunted by what is to come. Megatron does still live, and Optimus Prime knows he will one day threaten the Universe again."
